Black Earth - Diagrams of a Hidden Order CS ( In Solace Publishing: ISP02)
Limited cassette edition of 100 hand-numbered copies, pro-pressed tapes packaged in uncoated black-stock Bradpaks (Stumptown Printers), letter-pressed in Pantone 877 (metallic silver), including a fold-out poster designed by Kevin Gan Yuen (Sutekh Hexen) and sealed in anti-static sleeves.Design by Kevin Gan Yuen.
Spain's cryptic collective Black Earth that continues the path laid down by 2014's well received "A Cryptic Howl of Morbid Truth" cassette (Graceless Recordings). "Diagrams of a Hidden Order" presents us with three tracks showcasing their turbulent strain of blackened noise, that stretches the boundaries of black metal, death metal and dark ambient respectively, thus amplifying these genres into darker territory few have explored. Within the turbulence of chaos and bleakness, there exists fleeting form and (un)structure that is shattered and rebuilt over and over again; measured percussion, whispered incantations, and sudden outbursts of unseen violence. A truly potent alchemical document in practice.
Tracklisting: 1. Mantric Resonances Along Fields Of Dissolution 06:49 // 2. Upon Labyrinths Of Broken Mirrors 05:41 // 3. To Cloak A Nebulous Sun 06:22

Burial Hex/Crown of Bone - Split CS ( Crucial Blast: Infernal012)
This new entry in Crucial Blast's Infernal Machines limited edition cassette series again features the blistering black harsh noise of Crown Of Bone teamed up with another denizen of the black noise/death industrial / mutoid black metal underground. This time its with the renowned "horror electronics" project Burial Hex, aka Clay Ruby (also of Davenport, Totem, ex-Jex Thoth, Wormsblood, Journey To Ixtlan, Hintergedanken, and a bunch of other musical projects that I've been listening to over the past decade or more). Burial Hex's "Resurrection" is up first, opening with gusts of demonic breath and a distant scream of terror, then falling into silence. The first few minutes of the track are harrowing, that horrific screaming rising up in the background behind a veil of monstrous utterances cloaked in delay and other effects, and the sound of droning keys slowly drift in, dark electronic ambiance gradually rising to the surface. Eerie, John Carpenter-esque synths slowly curl across the blackness while those vile, guttural intonations continue to roll out, and this all starts to take shape as a kind of anguished, hellish power electronics as those nightmarish breathing sounds and bestial moans becoming more erratic, the screams more desperate. Further into the track, those warbling background drones start to transform into the sound of creepy pipe organs, but then it turns into something much noisier and more chaotic, those droning keyboards suddenly swallowed up in a gale of screeching metallic noise and howling feedback, turning into a harsh, squealing industrial nightmare. One of the most unsettling tracks I've heard from Burial Hex. On the b-side, black noise project Crown Of Bone (featuring a former member of Demonologists and Ensepulchered) follows with "Strangulation Rites". In a similar black, pulsating vein as his previous splits, this is a massive blast of harsh, endlessly churning blackened noise, a monstrous maelstrom of violent distortion and guttural death metal-style roaring, vague rhythmic sounds and crashing metallic cacophony all consumed by the raging inferno of Crown Of Bone's assault. It has all of the chaotic intensity of Government Alpha or Richard Ramirez or Vomir, but there's a malevolent streak running through this oppressive noisescape with bits of creepy half-glimpsed melody and those inhuman distorted vocals seething within the storm. And then right towards the end, after an extended passage of rumbling, locomotive reverberations, a swarm of evil black metal tremolo riffing suddenly descends, closing the track out with a final blast of frostbitten power. Punishing.. $4.00

Charity Saints - Charity Saints CS ( Bestial Burst: BeBu-093)
Debut release of Finnish band formed in 2015, three songs, 18 minutes of heavy, simple, repetitive and effective music that draws it´s influences from new wave, no wave, noise rock and late eighties industrial rock genres. Namedropping bands like Swans, Godflesh, Splintered, Killing Joke and Amebix may give you some kind of picture of what´s going on here, but please beware as it´s not a carbon copy of any of those and not easy to fit in today´s world of genres and micro genres. $3.67

Common Eider King Eider - Extinction CS ( Sol Y Nieve: Syn029)
"A new ritual from this long running doom/drone/ambient collective, offering up modern manifestations of ancient energies, channelled into smouldering swathes of ceremonial hypnosis and explosive gouts of blood-red radiance. Extinction is an extended ceremonial rite conducted below ground at the Wisp House (R.I.P.). A song suite of psychedelic devotionals assembled from reverb drenched industrial drones, billowing clouds of metallic throb, and churning, rhythmic bombast. Fields of ghostly incantations suspended in the ether, draped over metallic murmurs and moaning melancholia. The low end rumble of monk-like chants beneath the soft tangle of keening lamentation. A slowly evolving sensory sacrament, tense and harrowing, punctuated by dense dramatic swells and aching, mournful mantras."

Common Eider King Eider - Unhuulda CS ( Cloister Recordings: Crus14)
Common Eider, King Eiderhas always been an enigmatic project, marching to the beat of its own tribal drum and operating on the fringes of an already fringe scene—one that finds comfort in sweeping drones, stirring neofolk, field recordings, and pastoral near-silence. This endeavor (the collective effort of Rob Risk, Blaine Todd, and Andrew Weathers) bends noise and feedback to his will, smoothing out harsh edges into something soothing, gentle, and quite lovely; nature infuses every note and every pause, and that the project's latest album, ‘Unhuulda’, has a heavy environmental focus and its five movements sound like a dark forest evening is no coincidence. Beautiful, haunting eco-ambient.
‘Unhuulda’ is the latest offering from Common Eider King Eider's own imprint, Caribou People. It comes with a handmade book of poetry, printed with metallic gold ink on blood red 100% recycled paper.. $7.67

Concrete Mascara - Delusion Rituals CS ( Vanity: Black05)
If you haven't discovered that Concrete Mascara is at the forefront of American power electronics, well, you've only yourself to blame. You'll certainly figure it out when their debut for Malignant comes out in 2016 and sets the bar ridiculously high, but in the meantime, redeem yourself by grabbing this cassette of live material recorded in London and Brooklyn; aggravated waves of electronic abuse, scraping and clanging junk metal, samples, amplifier hum, and ferocious vocals. Make no mistake though, even in a live setting, what Concrete Mascara creates is carefully orchestrated and controlled, delivered with precision and intent. Masterful, like everything they seem to do.. $8.00

Control - Over Maschinenfest Part II -2015 CS ( Raubbau: Raub049)
Collab release between Raubbau and Pflichtkaup featuring material recorded live at MFest2015. Of course, as such, we encounter the inimitable live sound of Control; the multiple layers of sound, the ominously aggressive vocals, the razor-sharp sound quality. But since half of the tracks on this release are culled from his most recent Ant-Zen album ‘In Harm’s Way’, it also reflects Thomas Garrison’s development towards a darker, more atmospheric sound, in which the aggravating emotionality of his tracks unfolds even better. after creating a trademark sound within the power electronics genre for over a decade, control is now exploring a vast space of its own.
The horror is there - it’s man itself. face the facts, accept the truth and let control provide the misanthropic soundtrack with these six cutting edge live cuts.. $8.99

Gnawed - Death Evident CS ( Maniacal Hatred: MH12)
Since we last heard from Gnawed, things have been toned down a bit, and a more dark ambient influence has started to creep in. But, understand this, Grant's new material is stronger than anything he's every done; so bleak and ominous that it becomes majestic, with drifting, apocalyptic atmospheres that feel coated in rust and slow decay. When the heaviness and vocals do kick in, it becomes that much more threatening and intense. A new Gnawed CD is complete and will be out on Malignant on Spring, 2016, but in the meantime, Death Evident will give you a taste of what to expect. Absolutely essential.. $6.67

Gnawed/Velvet Curtain - Split CS ( Maniacal Hatred: MH10)

First time hearing Velvet Curtain, and truth be told, I don't know much about them, other then it's complimentary material to what Gnawed is doing; sounds of reverbed field recordings, musique concrete, tool box clutter, and metallic chain dragging. Third track ramps up the noise factor with distorted loops and ragged churn. Sounds Finnish or Swedish to me, but I don't think that's the case. Recommended.. $4.00

GOG - Ironworks CS ( Cloister Recordings: Crus17)
Recorded in a late 19th century blacksmith shop, where several members of his own close family toiled, GOG crafts a subversive ode to the death of the American dream using source sounds and atmosphere. This is the sound of physical labour, of blood, sweat, and tears. Metal rings on metal, shaping flesh and bone in the eternal pulse of the anvil and the searing flames of the furnace. "Ironworks" gives enslavement through capitalism a sinister soundtrack. With GOG, Michael Bjella has established himself as a major artist in the ambient field. Releases such as "Heavy Fierce Brightness: Spells of the Sun" have let to the project being described as "blackened psychedelic doomdrift dronelords". Collaborations with renowned artists in the field included splits like "Malpais" with William Fowler Collins, or "Fruition of the Occult" with Apparitia. Now, Michael Bjella enters a new dimension of sound with "Ironworks", which is probably his most deeply personal yet also highly political musical statement so far.. $6.33

3rd of 4 tapes released within a years time from this Nevada based, female fronted project. It Only Gets Worse - Angels CS ( Cloister Recordings: CRUS16)
Collaborative project between Matt Finney and Gnaw Their Tongue's Maurice De Jong; "Fusing the moody, jazzy sounds of Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks score with minimal electronic beats and weathered, gruff spoken poetry, Angels expounds upon the despondent roots of Finney and Mories’s earlier works and gives the individual elements more space. The droning, sedated pop syrup bleeds slowly and with purpose, as restrained and calculated as Finney’s truncated prose. The beautiful, calming music belies some very harsh themes, which are expanded further by Finney himself below, which feeds into my earlier conceit of brutality. This is sad, despairing music, and, when given the right context, is difficult to listen to in one sitting. And yet Angels is beautiful, and there are moments in which Mories’s downcast pop electronics, when paired with Finney’s distant, detached presentation, become otherworldly. There are a lot of harsh things in this world, gussied up with flowers and pretty colors, but they only serve as a mask, and the superficial beauty of Angels only makes what it hides all the more hideous". Invisible Oranges. $7.67

Jarl - Hypnagogic Domain CS ( Autarkeia: ACD92)
JARL "Hypnagogic Domain" CAS. Never published sound material of Swedish composer Erik Jarl dating back to 2007-2008. Here we have very suggestive ambient music conveying Erik’s experience in anomalous hypnagogic states that he often used to find himself in before. In Middle Ages, one believed that this state is induced by a demon sitting on one’s body. This is a phenomenon of the mind. Mental phenomena that occur during this "threshold consciousness" phase include lucid dreaming, hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. Other terms for hypnagogia, in one or both senses, that have been proposed include "presomnal" or "anthypnic sensations", "visions of half-sleep", "oneirogogic images" and "phantasmata", "the borderland of sleep", "praedormitium",. The "borderland state", "half-dream state", "pre-dream condition", "sleep onset dreams", dreamlets, and "wakefulness-sleep transition" state. Threshold consciousness [commonly called "half-asleep" or "half-awake", or "Mind Awake Body Asleep"] describes the same mental state of someone who is moving towards sleep or wakefulness but has not yet completed the transition. Such transitions are usually brief, but can be extended by sleep disturbance or deliberate induction, for example during meditation. side one: hypnagogic domain part 1-3 side two: hypnagogic part 4 Lim. Valanx is Arne Weinberg's main project and makes its debut on Cromlech Records with this 40 minute tape release. "Radiant Orbs of Abzu" consists of two 20 minute pieces of abstract experimentalism, drone constructs and dark ambient atmospheres. Both tracks are intertwined and form one long complete composition that is best experienced in one listening session. The two segments have been created as a sonic adulation to Absu, the Sumerian god of fresh water of the world. Absu (or Abzu) is also a reference to the primeval sea below the void space of the underworld and the earth above.. $7.00

Various Artists - T.O.M.B. / Clavicula Salomonis /Black Seas of Infinity / Bride - Split 2xC30 ( Danvers State Recordings: DSR57)
4 way split on 2 x C30s offering a diverse yet cohesive selection of blackened hopelessness and toxic atmospheres. First up is T.O.M.B. with three tracks of murky and opaque ritual ambience, that eventually moves into a more malevolent realm of clanging metal and soul crushing, hyper modulated, industrial noise.
Clavicula Salmonis is a new one for me with a 14 minute track of well composed and carefully constructed dark noise and atmospheric scourge, finishing it off with some serious crunch and grind.
It's been awhile since I've heard anything from Black Seas, but they've always struck me as a somewhat under appreciated act, though a lack of activity is probably more responsible for that. Still, nice to have them back, and the 15 minute piece is a good representation of their sound; lightless and bleak dark ambient that moves in slowly shifting patterns.
Lastly, Bride, which is a side project of T.O.M.B., focusing on ritualistic experimental and ambient sounds with hints of industrial and noise thrown in. 6 tracks.. $5.67
