Panic Bedroom - Beasts of the End Times ( Zoharum: CC001)
Let's face it, a poorly named project or band isn't going to instill a lot of confidence and can inflict a healthy amount of damage in regards to sales. That's the uphill battle Panic Bedroom certainly faces with their debut CD, which is a shame, because what's inside (yes, it's the proverbial don't judge a book by it's cover) is something pretty damn respectable: lots of distortion and industrial noise, with some rhythmically crunchy power electronics nicely done in an old school fashion akin to something Negru Voda would conjure up. This is some stripped down, nihilistic, and grimy stuff that I can't say I expected.. $11.00

Panzar - Pratotypon ( Old Europa Café: OECD078)
Pratotypon is the final statement for Panzar, the OTHER harsh side project of Peter Andersson (Raison D’Etre), though not AS harsh as Stratvm Terror, nor as complex.. Features 5 live tracks, early, unreleased prototypes, and a Panzar re-mix of Folkstorm's ‘Victory or Death’ track! Minimalistic to start, but slowly builds, getting more agitated as it goes, with gritty frequency drones, throbbing pulsations, and scourging industrial clangor.. $14.99

Paranoia Inducta - Pia Fraus ( Beast of Prey: BOP5.8)
Pia Fraus” is second part of the Lux Mundi trilogy. This trilogy is a tribute to all those who died, were killed, deceived, humiliated and oppressed by the Catholic Church . It's a tribute to all those victims who instead of love and hope were given torment and death. I can basically justcut and past the description from Gloria Laus as it applies here as well, so here you go: " bleak dark ambient, swelling, echoed drones, ritual voices, and plenty of those haunted factory scurryings and clangs that I just can't resist. Features input from eLL (SUI GENERIS UMBRA) and Robert Marciniak (Rukkanor". The CD is uniquely packaged - red cover with 12-page booklet filled with graphics marching every track. The booklet inside is a specially designed cross-shaped envelope and sealed . Limited edition of 444 pieces.Reminds me of Atrium Carceri to some degree, though certainly not derivative. Impressive output from Poland, yet again!. $6.00

Passione Nera - Research EP ( Cold Meat Industry: CMI185)
The "Research EP" marks the first offering from the ever-growing Roman outfit Passione Nera.Originally conceived by Andy in the dying days of 2005, it would not be until the spring of the following year that the band took its first steps, and embarked on a journey that would eventually see the project evolve into a 4-piece band (by early 2007). Initially, the songs were stripped-down acoustic guitar compositions with the occasional addition of piano, accordion or organ. However, as the band grew and expanded, the songs were redefined and their sound changed.Today, Passione Nera has evolved from a folk-pop creature into a fully-fledged chamber-pop ensemble. The band keeps one watery alcoholic eye fixed on the cinematic tradition, with melodic landscapes that are dusty and melancholy. These melodious scenes are then wrapped up in lush, orchestrated songs with acoustic and electric guitars taking the center stage, and additionally enhanced by a large array of other instruments. It is as if these songs were written on the backs of 1960s postcards brought back from some imaginary journey into “Americana”, then bred with French-pop, cross-fertilized with baroque-pop, and finally molded into a soundtrack for the broken-hearted, the disenchanted and the misunderstood. The "Research EP" features appearances by Simone "Hellvis" Salvatori (guest vocals on "Sinking"), and Piergiorgio "PJ" Ambrosi (additional arrangements and co-production) of older brothers Spiritual Front, and will be released as digipak CD-single and limited 7" vinyl.. $3.50

PBK/Josh Lay - Collaborative CD ( Syndrom Records: Syn005CD)
A new self titled split CD sees the collaboration of two artists on this release for Syndrom Records.
American composer, Phillip B. Klingler, better known as PBK, has been active in the experimental music underground since 1986. His soundwork correlates to electroacoustic, classic industrial and free jazz genres. PBK has fashioned a noise-based music that doesn't rely on power electronics process, but rather, by placing noises themselves into ambient/atmospheric sound environments. His soundworks are composed from turntable manipulation, sampling and analog/digital synthesis. Improvising spontaneously and with little preconception, PBK creates pulsing, echoing, organic soundscapes of unknown sonic origin.
Josh Lay combines his horror-noise approach with PBK's psychedelic synth improvisation into a deep, forbidding soundscape.. $11.00

Penjaga Insaf - Sama Sadja ( Power & Steel: PAS27)
For several years Ingo Sauerbrey made extensive travels through Indonesia, always carrying recording equipment to collect sounds as an audio diary. During periodic return trips to Germany, he started to work on the recordings with electronic devices. Some sounds were edited, cut and transformed, while others were kept completely intact. To name a few sound sources only recordings from Water Puppet and Shadow Theatres, Gamelan and various welcoming and fighting dances like Kecak, Jegog and the Tarian Caci were used for this album. Some of those impressive performances were made of 60 to 90 men chanting and dancing while a bamboo orchestra used 4 meter long bamboo sticks playing bass drums on it. Sada SAdja is weaving together the sounds of living traditions, religions and languages with spherical ambient pads and electronically edited drones from the field recordings. This is an contemplative and intimate soundtrack from the deepest heart of South East Asia. LOKI/PaS. $13.77

Peter Bjargo - The Architecture of Melancholy ( Cyclic Law: 41stCycle)
Peter Bjärgö, the man behind the now legendary groups ARCANA and SOPHIA is back with his second solo album. On his first solo release "A wave of Bitterness", we got a glimpse into the mind of a thoughtful person. Now this new release, "The Architecture Of Melancholy", we are sent onto a journey to the darkest depths of Peter's mind and thoughts. Melancholy was once a disease, a mental statement of chronic depression, we are now facing this illness again around the world and this album is a real journey with the melancholic mind. Titles like Bitteresque, Apathy and The Death Of Our Sun give us an idea of the aural voyage ahead. The delicate blend of soft guitars, engulfing dark ambient and the sheer power of Peter's voice make this album a shining diamond among stones. Hope is all that is left...Edition of 700 copies in 8 panel digipack. 7 Tracks. Running Time 40:30. $12.66

Previously released in 2006 as a strictly limited edition on Bjärgö’s own label, Erebus Odora, “Out Of The Darkling Light, Into The Bright Shadow” now receives a worthy re-release treatment. Peter Bjärgö and Gustaf Hildebrand collaborate on an album that marks a significant departure in style for both parties. Abstract electronic beats and rhythms collide with occultism and brooding ambiances to conjure up images of secret societies, locked away in candle lit chambers below street level, performing rituals the outside world is blissfully unaware of. A unique fusion of ambient, ritual and electronic elements, it offers a glimpse into a world just out of reach, a world where the state religion was penned by Aleister Crowley and where esoteric symbols have the power to influence both mind and body. Features a previously unreleased bonus track.Edition of 600 copies in 4 panel digipack. 10 Tracks. Running Time 53:31. $12.66

Phaenon - His Master's Voice ( Malignant: TumorCD45)
After the well received debut Submerged, Phaenon follows things up with an even deeper immersion into a world of bleak, isolationist sounds. Whereas Submerged was one long and infinitely expansive drone piece, His Master’s Voice is broken up into four separate, but flowing tracks of sprawling and spacious ambient drift, laced with interstellar disturbances, probing, alien tones and icy shards of celestial debris…a whirling specter of darkness and void-ic space, thematically based upon the 1968 novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem, which is centered around the efforts by scientists to decode, translate and understand a series of extraterrestrial transmissions. As a whole, His Master’s Voice represents a logical progression in Phaenon’s sound and is the ultimate in headphone listening. In gorgeous 6 panel digipak.. $9.00

Phaenon - Submerged ( Malignant: TumorCD30)
With the debut release from Phaenon, it is immediately evident a heavyweight has arrived. The brainchild of Polish born, but current Maryland resident, Szymon Tankiewicz, Submerged is a dark ambient tour de force. Visually and sonically enveloping, this is an album of space and texture, slowly revealing a psychoactive soundscape of majestic, arcing timbres, circadian buzzes, and expansive drones. Heavy, and cosmically weighty in the beginning, Submerged evolves into something more minimalist and serene, radiating a celestial beauty, yet becoming even more bleak and suffocating as it progresses over it's 66 minute time frame. Experienced from start to finished, there’s a palpable sense of drifting and drowning, of being carried away into an endless, interstellar vacuum. An exciting new project, and a must for dark ambient purists. Check out Phaenon's myspace page for excerpts of new works at www.myspace.com/szymontankiewicz. In stylish 6 panel digipak, artwork by K. Phase II - Afterglow ( Ahnstern: Ahnstern29)
has been a little over thirty years since the inception and all-too-brief life span of Phase II, the progressive-folk band founded by Mark Andrews (Blue Grass) and Nicholas Tesluk (Changes). Since that time, only the five selections on their self-titled, blue vinyl, extended-play record (and a handful of songs featured in recent anthology appearances) have found an audience outside of the venues where the group performed live during their original three-year tenure. That is about to change! As the piece de resistance of Phase II's artistic career to date, the band's new album Afterglow has arrived, introducing modern listeners to their unique and timeless mixture of varied musical stylings. Included in this expansive release are six songs from their original repertoire - in some cases, songs only rehearsed, but never before performed in any venue - all recorded here for the very first time. As a special reprise, all of the songs from the blue vinyl record (now long out-of-print) have been enhanced and included on the Afterglow album. And to bring things full-circle, Phase II is also proud to present a recording of its first all-new song of the twenty-first century on this compact disc.To round out an already-generous Phase II presentation, the album concludes with "Candle in the Night", their complete pre-progressive, conceptual radio program from 1978 (two songs of which were included on 2004's Tonwerk Flammenzauber 2 CD). The Afterglow package includes an attractive booklet featuring full lyrics, as well as an anecdotal history of the band in text and photos.Whether during their "folk duo" period, or as a full progressive band, the original warmth of the music of Phase II was felt all-too-briefly and by all-too-few. Afterglow is a comprehensive retrospective of their original songs. Now that Nicholas and Mark have reunited in this "Digital Age", may it also provide a launch pad for exciting new works to come.Phase II Afterglow - Thirty-two years in the making ... and not a moment too soon!. $6.00

Following two CDs on Eternal Soul and a recent split LP on LOKI, Germany’s revered dark ambient project Phelios makes their first appearance for Malignant. Collectively, Astral Unity is thoughtful and concise – a vivid and richly detailed entity that’s alive and constantly evolving, channeling the universe while simultaneously exploring the inner regions of a more primordial earth. Phillip Munch - Mondo Obscura ( Ant-Zen: Act275)
On this, his second solo album, Philipp Munch has assimilated musical influences spanning the last four decades, bringing a brilliant and contemporary release into being, just as he did on last year's 'Into the Absurd'. Supported by a number of musician friends he puts an emphasis on vintage electronics and creations ranging from classic rhythmic noise and minimal electro to cinematic ambient whilst retaining a modern edge, which sets him apart among those who work only for sheer nostalgia. A clearly noticeable component on 'Mondo Obscura' is the expanded range of vocals performed by Philipp himself and guest artists such as Kyoung-hi Roho, Riotmiloo (eva|3), Tim Kniep (Synapscape) and Dan Gatto (Continues, Babyland). This multitude of vocalists creates a vast subset of accents and moods ranging between melancholy and aggression. Musically, moody minimal pop tunes alternate with harsh power electronics and space-age ambience performed with a high amount of flexibility on rhythms, effects and sounds. A very strong, personal and complete release that deserves close attention, highly recommended to those who are eager to look beyond the limits of musical styles.. $7.00

Phragments - Earth Shall Not Cover Their Blood ( Malignant: TumorCD37)
You’ve seen it before. Certain bands or artists delivering their finest work with their first recording. Then, in futile attempts to capture some of the same magic, becoming formulaic and stale, rehashing ideas and never really achieving the same caliber of work. Others, expanding on the elements of their prior releases, and through a natural maturation process, get stronger with each release. That would certainly be the case with Phragments. With their third full length studio CD, this Slovakian duo have made remarkable strides not only in quality but in scope. Equipped with an enriched sonic palate, Earth Shall Not Cover Their Blood mixes forceful brass and dark orchestral strings with rolls of powerful tribal percussion, somber wind instrumentation, ominous atmospheres, industrial clangor, and a strong and commanding vocal presence, particularly on tracks like “Over Deadlands” and “The Kin of Cain”. Cohesive, complete, and epic, this is a release that will open some eyes to new found authority of Phragments. Yours to discover. In 6 panel digipak.. $10.00

Phragments - New Kings and New Queens ( Malignant: TumorCD58)
The first new release from Phragments since 2008’s Earth Shall Not Cover Their Blood should be looked upon as a special, stand alone release, devoted not to the more daunting neo-classical atmospheres that make up the majority of Phragments' discography, but to something much darker and abstract; one long track, broken up into 6 chapters of slowly evolving landscapes of black and grey drones, sparsely interrupted by orchestral swells of golden light. And while this is indeed a more minimalistic approach to recording for Matej, in typical fashion, it is also very detailed and painstakingly composed, flowing seamlessly from one point to another over its 32 minute time frame. In terms of genre, this is pure orchestral dark ambient – bleak and solemn, yet with a certain calmness and emotionality, becoming almost sacral and poignant as it unfolds. Phragments & Korinth - Mysteries of the Greylands ( Greytone: Grey01)
Always nice to get some new sounds from Phragments, even if it is in collaborative form, which in this case, is with fellow Slovakian, Korinth, whose Sign of Eternal Return CD we heaped praises on several years ago. A pretty natural blending of styles here - the flowing orchestral drones of Korinth seemlessly merging with the more cinematic and ominous stylings of Phragments. It is more graceful and not as bombastic as I was thinking it might be, but still, beautifully executed and well conceived.. $7.00

Pietro Riparbelli K11 - Radiodrama|Collapse CD+ Soundpackage ( Radical Matters: RMLE011)
A special concept album utilizing incredible and original radio signals as source materials as recorded in different parts of the world by: Bad Sector, Strange Attractor, Clausthome, Galerie Schallschutz, Simm-el, and others. Recomposed by Pietro Riparbelli, focusing on the esoteric side of electromagnetic activities (ITC, EVP, and trans-dimensional phenomena) all around us. Here's what Pietro has to say about his own work: I’m dedicating to sound study related to the environment, with particular reference to concrete music, to phenomenology of perception and invisible phenomena. Currently I’m dedicating to the world of radio transmission and communication using only sound sources from short wave radio receivers and other types of signals. PT-R and K 11 are two parallel projects. PT-R is a project that deals with the way to create sound landscapes making the use of environmental sounds (field recordings). In this project I use only sounds coming from the world. K 11 is a project that deals with the world of radio signals, the trans-communication and other invisible phenomena, to create a dimension where the only sound sources are signals from shortwave radio receivers. In this project I use only sounds coming from the atmosphere and from invisible places. ". $8.00

Pjusk - Tele ( Glacial Movements: GM0013)
Pjusk is Rune Sagevik and Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik from the west coast of Norway – both from small villages close to nature. This is where most of the music of Pjusk is made – framed by snowy peaks and the sound of cold streams.
The album "Tele" (the Norwegian word describing frozen underground water) is a natural progression from the album "Sval" released on the US label 12k in 2010. Inspired by the arctic wilderness, Tele is a journey of snow, ice and cold. All tracks composed and produced by Pjusk except:. $13.66

Protagonist, The - A Rebours ( Raubbau: Raub006)
‘A rebours’, the novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans, is certainly a very important piece of literature, a landmark of symbolist aestheticism - and of language itself. Released in 1884, it still amazes readers today, and really: how would you guess someone back then could have thought up a hyper-materialistic decadence that still potentially shocks you today, even though quite a bit of it has become commonplace dealing in our times? ‘A rebours’, consequently an ambitious title for a music album for sure, and especially for an artist’s debut. but when Cold Meat Industry released this in 1998, it seemed all appropriate, for it was met with high expectations, after Magnus Sundström (the creative spirit being The Protagonist) was featured on some high profile compilations. and really, the album, was excitedly greeted and well received by the dark industrial crowd. The sheer power of the orchestral, cinematic, imaginative pieces, the obviously talented compositions are all too convincing. Various guests on the (mostly spoken) vocals and playing additional instruments, mostly strings add depth and variation to the album’s tracks. A benchmark release in neo-classical.. $15.33

Protagonist, The - Songs of Experience ( Raubbau: Raub011)
Re-issue of this outstanding CMI release from 2005, including the Interim EP. Here's my original review: " Incredible, meticulously crafted compositions, full of crushing weight and drama, gathering at the intersection where dark ambient meets neo-classical. Very cinematic, very professional in sound, and very grandiose in scope, with deep timbres and tense strings rising to meet resonant brass, soaring choral vocals, heavy percussion, and literary samples. Just like his debut, A Rebours, the title Songs of Experience betrays the literary impact on the music. And just like the poems of William Blake, these compositions strive to forge a perfect marriage between romanticism and darkness, with most emphasis on the latter this time around. Of the eight tracks, some are reworked versions of rare compilation tracks and some are completely new. Taken together they show the steady evolution of The Protagonist in the 21st century, of an artist that treasure an impeccable end-product over fast turnarounds and proliferation. Brilliant. A late entry for record of 2005".. $15.33
