Bad Sector - Chronoland ( Power & Steel: PAS30)
 |
This new album of Massimo Magrini is the soundscape for a mind movie and another masterpiece that picks up where the previous work CMASA left off. Twelve beautifully crafted chapters of music segueing between morphing layers of thick drones, haunting melodies and crackling vocal transmissions. Chronoland unfolds a fascinating and cineastic atmosphere of frightening ambient melodica with dark soundwaves deeply imbedded in the music and bursts of electro-acoustic effects. This release is another step forward into the sound cosmos of Massimo Magrini with new directions but always in the unique way of BAD SECTOR.. $13.77

Bad Sector - CMASA ( Power & Steel: PAS23)
 |
In 2005 Massimo Magrini was invited to provide a soundtrack for the M3M art exhibition in Pisa/Italy. The exhibition was based around images of the seaside and the rivers estuary of Pisana area with CMASA airplane factory built there in it's centre vis a vis of archaic marine cottages. This marvelous seaside scenery mixed with vintage industrial locations, together with some kind of nostalgia, created an unexpected but amazing mood. To sculpture a soundtrack of this scenery Massimo Magrini was asked to use acoustic and natural sounds too and so he added for this work treated piano and snippets of acoustic guitars together with water sounds and metal samples. This may sound unusual for a BAD SECTOR release but all those new elements are perfectly blended into the massive and ambient soundwaves for what previous releases are known for and making CMASA probably to the most emotional album of Massimo Magrini to date. All initial exhibition sounds where regenerated, remastered and re-assembled during 2007-2009. $13.77

Re-issue. Built around the use of radio signals, coils, high voltage transformers, pulsars, and other forms of electronic gadgetry, this is surprisingly atmospheric and ambient considering the source. Dreamy, gentley flowing pieces with a staticy undercurrent, with voices and layered textures seeming to sinuously snake their way into the mix.. $13.66

Bad Sector - Transponder ( Infinite Fog: IF-12)
 |
Re-release of a 1999 CDr on Blade Records. Transponder really was an unheralded gem (with a criminally small press run of 120) within the Bad Sector catalog, collecting tracks from various cassette compilations from the mid-'90s and capturing the classic Bad Sector sound; meditatively hypnotic textures, vibrant ambient swells, and percolating beds of ghostly ambience. 60 + minutes of material here, with 2 previously unpublished tracks from 1998.. $11.00

Band of Pain - Sacred Flesh O.S.T. ( Cold Spring: CSR33)
 |
The soundtrack was written by Steve Pittis' Band Of Pain, creating a very dark, brooding atmosphere to compliment Nigel Wingrove's film. Originally with a 16-page booklet depicting explicit scenes from the film, pressure from the distributors forced the artwork into a revised 4-page version. Sacred Flesh is dark journey into realms of mental anguish and repression; a very Black Ambient soundtrack. This is Band Of Pain working in the medium to which its most suited. An incredible album with massive demand from both film and music distributors alike. 10 year anniversary edition of 666 copies!. $5.00

Barrikad & Government Alpha - Daydreaming 3 inch CDr ( L-White: LW055)

Harsh ...no, make that HARSH noise collaboration between these two acts. One 20 minute track that's extremely loud and brutal. Mostly operates on the mid-level and not so much in the upper frequency bands, which makes it much more listenable to me. But, really, there's not much to write here ...it's just good old fashion, devastatingly heavy, tinnitus inducing noise.. $4.00

Barzel - Born to Destroy Armalek ( Topheth Prophet: TP014)
 |
Thought this review from Blood Ties webzine was pretty fitting, so here you go: "For those of you not in the know Barzel is a extremist Zionist power electronics unit twisting the more traditional conservative white power extremist stance that many pe projects espouse and putting his own Jewish Orthodox spin on things. This album comes at an interesting time to me as I just finished watching the film Paradise Now about 2 suicide bombers on the Palestinian side of things and the issues they faced while deciding their own fate. Now I get a taste of the occupiers side of things and it seems a bit harsh. The general sound here is quite a lo-fi one, but there's a lot of open space and room to breath in this recording which you don't find as often in lo-fi recordings like this. The material in parts is as minimalist as the great power electronics project Death Squad, but at other times like in Victory I am reminded more of Morder Machine, good company for sure. There are 10 tracks that make up Born to Destroy Amalek and I enjoy every one just fine. Some of the shorter tracks which feature political spoken word samples are mixed a bit too loud and the editing is somewhat shoddy on them, but they break things up and offer a little more depth to the concept so I tend not to mind them too much. The great thing about Born to Destroy Amalek is that it offers a good balance between pure power, harshness, and stranger more creative experimental styles which add much unique flavor to the album and make it more then just another pure pe release. ". $4.00

Bionular - Sacred Mushroom Chant ( Wrotycz: WRT011)
 |
Recordings built soley from utilizing the human voice, though you'd have a hard time figuring that out if you weren't aware of it going into this. Warm and minimalistic ambient recordings with multiple layers being added as it progresses, either via shifting textures or glitchy intrusions. Each of the five tracks is based on a separate part of the sound source. Then the base is: an archival record of shamanic chant associated with the ceremony of taking hallucinogenic mushrooms, a Japanese traditional song extracted from a collection of old vinyl records, Neil Armstrong's walking on the lunar surface famous phrase, a fragment of an interview with Marcel Duchamp telling about his first ready-made, and finally the voice of the artist himself denouncing the sentence attributed to Hassan ibn Sabbah (“Nothing is true”).Over 50 minutes of pure experimental music created on the basis of author's creative method called the "100% sound recycling.". $6.00

Bisclaveret - Ephemerois (Ante T Deum) ( Zoharum: Zohar0112)
 |
Bisclaveret's new album Epheremos [Ante 'Te Deum'] is a concept album focused on the link between the man and the seven angels "Ofis", "Ejael", "Donkuel", "Izrafael", "Semakiel", "Azrael" and "Androgyne" (names used also for titles of the seven tracks of the release). Musically, this is polished and composed...semi-structured, which I'd loosely label as dark wave, but that has really negative conotations to me, and that's not the vibe I get from this record. Still, these are actual songs more or less, with some very solemn spoken vocals (with a tinge of anger), shimmering guitar, and an underbelly of droning atmospherics, synth pad noises, and a ritual touch.. $7.00

Black Sun Productions - The Impossibility of Silence 2CD ( OEC: OECD086)
New double CD from these ex Coil dancers. Following the bands highly acclaimed 2005 album operettAmorale, The Impossibility of Silence is the new studio album from Black Sun Productions, consisting of 23 tracks spanning two thematic CDs, As Above and So Below. Coming into a luxurious 8 panels digipack illustrated by Val Denham, The Impossibility of Silence is a cinematic journey into sonic abstractness and poetic concretism. Chasing rhythms and haunting melodies to score a motion picture made of eerie dreams and hallucinogenic visions. It is Moon Music for the children of darkness, a gloomy invocation to all executed poets and a lullaby echoing through the silence. Labelled by the artists themselves as intuitive music for sensible ears, the album incorporates reworked versions of material originally featured in the Black Sun Productions limited edition releases Toilet Chant (2004) and Once in a Full Moon (2005) as well as new and unreleased material. The album is littered with contributions by guest artists such as Lydia Lunch, Val Denham, Sudden Infant, Sonne Hagal and Testing Vault. Didn't get a chance to listen to both CDs, but what I did listen to will certainly have great appeal for Coil enthusiasts. $24.00

Blitzkrieg Baby - Porcus Norvegicus ( Neuropa: NRP35)
 |
Norwegian industrial project Blitzkrieg Baby is like an ego without any sense of moral propriety. Blitzkrieg Baby’s music is depraved, debased, stylized, brutal, and merciless—not so much written as it is channeled into reality by Kim Sølve, Anders B., Bjeima, Petter Berntsen aka Plenum and Alan Belardinelli. Dark, threatening, industrial and carrying traces of artists like NON, early Laibach, and SPK, you will never really know what to expect from one track to the next. “Porcus Norvegicus” ranges through a full spectrum of menace. From subtle and disconcerting to sledge hammer heavy, to homicidally disturbed, Blitzkrieg Baby is taking trophies, not prisoners. Concentrating more on visceral feeling than driving within the lines of any one genre, the music comes from a place of turmoil and suffering—with a wry, twisted smile never far away. Truly one of the more original and outwardly unique recordings I've heard recently - very composed and constructed, at times almost theatrical, and a real harkening back to something that would have been released in the mid-'90s, even if it sounds completely contemporary. Recommended.. $14.33

Blood Axis - Ultimacy 1991-2011 ( Storm: Strm13)
 |
Ultimacy (1991-2011) brings together on one CD the definitive versions of all the singles and compilation tracks released by Blood Axis during the first two decades since the project was founded. Packaged in an elegant digifile case designed by Davide Maspero and Max Ribaric of the Italian underground journal Occidental Congress, and expertly re-mastered by Blood Axis member and renowned studio engineer Robert Ferbrache, Ultimacy presents these rare tracks in their ideal form, exactly as the band itself has always heard and envisioned them. The songs appear in a reverse chronological order, beginning with more recent work and moving back through time to the distant past. Blood Axis has never been bound to a particular style of music, and this is amply demonstrated here with material that spans from aggressive folk rock to atmospheric ritual pieces, all the way to menacing electronica. The topical themes of these songs encompass European folklore; early 20th-century German occultism; Norse and Perso-Roman mythology; fatalism, militarism, and Nietzschean romanticism. In addition to the three core Blood Axis members-Michael Moynihan, Robert Ferbrache, and Annabel Lee-the songs on Ultimacy also feature a number of notable guest contributors including Stephen Flowers (Edred Thorsson), Boyd Rice (Non), Thomas Thorn (Slave State / My Life with the Thrill Kill Kill Kult / Electric Hellfire Club), and Markus Wolff (Waldteufel). Blood Axis has always elicited strong, polarized reactions and a fair dose of controversy that still lingers to the present day. Ultimacy provides a unique opportunity for both the initiated and the uninitiated to explore the history of an influential an uncompromising musical project that refuses to be categorized or contained, and which always operates according to its own rules. "A thunderstorm was in our sky, the nature which we are grew dark-for we had no road." - Nietzsche Comes in a gatefold digisleeve with inner jacket. CD running time: 72 minutes. $15.77

Brethren - Alienated & Radicalized ( Freak Animal: FreakCD69)
 |
One of the most anticipated albums of American power electronics/harsh industrial! With very few, yet outstanding. releases, Brethren has firmly proven to be one of the genre's most striking forces. Gathering both fanatic glorification and hostile opposition with his honest and to-the-point political message, 2005's "Savage Inequalities" finally has a follow-up full-length. "Alienated and Radicalized" delivers guaranteed Brethren. A solid 40-minute album with song after song of memorable and striking assaults. Each track consists of carefully constructed noise loops, rhythms, throbbing synthesizers, spoken word samples and trademark hyper- aggressive vocals. Well-structured and song-like assaults make each individual song stand strong. No song is clouded with muddiness and instead, each is sharp and clear, with noisy, ripping power. Vocals spit the words with clear articulation and each sound element is heard in its full energy. Nothing in this album is particularly vulgar or offensive. The message, language and artwork doesn't attempt to offend the enemy with tasteless provocations, but simply manifests the conviction and life mission of Brethren. Freak Animal is proud to present this album packaged with no less than a 20-page, full-color booklet including artwork and all the lyrics.. $14.99

Budrus is a Lithuanian duo featuring Girnu Giesmes and Pogrom. So, if you know these projects, you know one is more hypnotic ambient and one more death industrial/pe. What Budrus manages to successfully do is to go beyond a mere collaboration and forge the two sounds together while creating an entirely new identity. Emotive drones, melancholic, highly emotive, melodies and a diversity of compositions and textures, combined with a hard, commanding, Eastern European vocal performance from Leonardas Marozas. Downtempo, ambient/drone with the forcefulness of power electronics, without having almost any musical similarities to mentioned genres. Recommended. Budrus - Devyniems Rytams Austant ( Self-released: Bud01)
 |
An cool discovery from Lithuania initially discovered via a recommendation from M. Aspa of Freak Animal, Budrus have crafted a unique sound based around some rather electrifying and dynamic drones, at times nearly orchestral in nature and scope, and vibrating with a tightly coiled tension and nervous intensity. Some hard and rather grim Eastern European vocals only add to the effect, giving parts of this disc an aggressive and threatening feel akin to perhaps a stripped down version of IRM. Other parts are more serene and hypnotic, the drones shimmering and drawn out in the vein of Troum or some Zoviet France. Definitely an act to keep an eye on.. $6.00

Burial Hex - Book of Delusions ( Cold Spring: CSR166)
 |
During the period in which Clay Ruby first began working on this piece of art, he had become so completely surrounded by evil and deception that he was forced to begin summoning a particularly extreme and ancient force of protection and vitality just to make it alive through the end of 2008. Aside from spiritually fortifying Ruby's life, the complexities of these new elemental entities brought with them circumstances causing a much more rich and intense recording experience than he could have ever composed on his own. Classic horror electronics and post-industrial apocalyptic soundscapes with unsettling notes, anguished cries and voices of the dead. His most ritualistic album yet. Reissue of the extremely limited LP with bonus tracks taken from the split LPs with Kinit Her and Zola Jesus, all available on CD for the first time! All tracks have been carefully remastered.. $12.66

BVDUB - I Remember (Translations of Morketid) ( Glacial Movements: GM011)
 |
“Alessandro Tedeschi, aka Netherworld, has become a dear friend of mine since his kind invitation to produce an album for Glacial Movements last year, and his vision, kindness, and honesty have been an inspiration. He had sent me a copy of his album ‘Mørketid,’ and from the opening notes I was mesmerized – not in a typical way, as his music is far too subtle for that, but on a much deeper level, as the music brought a flood of memories surging forth that I had long thought lost. It took me back to those times when ambient music was so pure, and so true… so when he then asked if I would be interested in doing a translation of the album, I couldn’t have said yes any faster. I call them translations, as they are not remixes. I used his original work as a base, and it is indeed interwoven in the translations, but my translations serve more as my own narratives on the memories and feelings his original work evoked. The translations are about memories… memories of dreams lost, and never fulfilled… but also the beauty in knowing that dreams exist… as whether they come true or not, it’s in their pursuit that life means anything. The original album brought back all my memories of my time in the early rave scene, the dreams I (and everyone, really) had for the beautiful utopia that only existed in our minds, and which we were only able to reach but a few times – but also my current surroundings of China, where in a rapidly changing environment, I am constantly reminded of unrealized dreams – deserted buildings that stand as monuments of once-great visions, and echoes of so many voices once yearning to be heard, wanting only for the world to remember them for a moment. And so it has been a strange kind of full-circle experience, as I stand in this place with no connection to my former life, yet in it I realize that every ‘scene’ is the same – we all just want to be heard, by someone - and to be remembered.” Really beautiful, relaxing and flowing drones, and textures that are ethereal and peaceful.. $12.00
