Lacus Somniorum - Tideshaper ( Cyclic Law: 22ndCycle)
Splendid collaborative work between Gustaf Hildebrand and Amanda Votta, Lacus Somniorum emerged as a mutual desire to convey a suggestive concept of what lies hidden and unseen by the eyes of modern civilization--beneath the waves in murky chasms, or perhaps in places not anchored within our concept of reality. Airy flutes and choirs hover above sometimes distant, rumbling sound textures, hinting of corroded machinery and unseen presences but also emphasizing a sense of serenity and peace of mind. The underlying concept is not fear of the unknown, but rather of a hidden beauty within those places where none of us will ever venture.Edition of 1000 copies In fold out gatefold cardboard sleeve.. $12.99

Lamia Vox - ...Introductio ( Indiestate: Angriff38)
Intriguing debut from this female fronted project of richly textured, Lovecraftian inspired dark ambience. At it's core, the drones remind me a bit of Bad Sector (ghostly reverberations with a cosmic feel), but these are augmented by subtle ritual touches and something more sinister lurking in the shadows. Because of that, Endura came to mind once or twice as well, though this is generally less structured than what they traditionally did. Limited to 500 copies comes in a full colour 4-panel digipak.. $7.00

Land:Fire - Shortwave Transmission ( Power & Steel: PAS25)
Coming back with an all new album after more than 5 years the alter ego of Herbst9 delivers another outstanding soundtrack about radiological warfare and it's debris during the last century. SWT is like a massive energy spike with a surrounding maelstrom of machine noises, rhythms, interferences and electromagnetic waves. The complex arrangement of technical sounds creates a deadly atmosphere of fallout and devastated landscapes with an apocalyptic aura reflected by dissonant harmonies and deep shimmering ambient scapes. Presented in a 6 panel digipak. Mastered by Andreas Wahnmann (First Law). $13.77

Lasik Surgery - Cyclo CD/DVD ( Silentes: SME1039)
Tense electronic passages and calm ambient with inserts of sharp and harsh metallic sonorities, distortions, filaments of subliminal melodies, and masses of dark and penetrating low frequency drones. The journey of Lasik Surgery starts with a whirlwind of atmospheres and perpetually prismatic sonorities that have a big impact on the listener. This project was born from the minds of Pierpaolo Zoppo (Mauthausen Orchestra), the memorable noise-power electronic author who firmly came back to the fore in the recent years, and Gianluca Favaron, a skilled master controller and sound assembler with a long experience, already active under other aliases (Ab'she, Under the Snow, Metal Music Machine). The first exciting chapter of Lasik Surgery - a name that will surprise us again in the future for sure - comes with a free DVD that includes two videclips created by ENRICO BRESSAN.. $8.00

Law-Rah Collective, The - Solitaire ( Raubbau: Raub008)
Like on the 2008 Ant-Zen album 'Inspiration', the duo Martijn Pieck and Bauke Van Der Wal upped the ante with the collective's 7th full release. Sound wise they return to the collective's origins: a combination of ambient structures and deep drones with sudden breaks in the sound spectrum. 'Solitaire's threatening and oppressive mood will leave you in a state and in a place where you haven't been before. A new reality which is more then the sum of its parts.. $6.00

Les Sentiers Conflictuels & Andrew King - 1888 ( Athanor: Athanor032)
A well executed conceptual release in which Andrew King reads the mysterious letters that Scotland Yards received in late 1888 signed "Jack the Ripper", over a bed of disturbing neoclassical, heavily atmospheric, foggy drones and archival sounds (mechanical noises, operettes and old cylinder samples). A dark journey into the wet sinuous streets of Whitechapel, London 1888. From a review by Mark Coyle. "An album that explores a time and acts that are in their own way part of our heritage, myths and social history [...] Like the blackest horror film you have ever been placed within. There genuinely has not been an album like this before." Very handsome digipak. $16.50

Lethal Dose 50 - 21st Century Awakenings ( Nuit Et Brouillard: NBCD06)
First official CD release from this Belgian outfit will appeal to those fond of the ‘70s and ‘80s space electronic sound (ie, Tangerine Dream, Nocturnal Emissions), as well as newer purveyors, most notably First Law and Bad Sector. Clear, flowing, cosmic drones and penetrating tones with a hypnotic, drugged feel, sometimes interspersed with the occasional rhythm. Nothing warm and milky here though, more cold and sterile…but, I mean that in the most positive sense. Housed in an original A5 size silk-screened fold-out cover.. $4.00

Liyr - Fragments of Dust ( Rage in Eden: Rage72)
New French act operating in the heavy neo-classical realm, with some rather hefty martial percussion, stern brass, and apocalyptic choirs. There’s no re-invention of the wheel here, but it’s definitely well done - well produced, and not “canned” sounding at all.. $8.00

Liyr - Sub Terra Inferis ( Rage in Eden: Rage81)
Second album from Liyr after their well received debut - another take on bombastic neo-classical, which Liyr certainly does well, but they manage to distinguish themselves by operating at somewhat of a frantic pace, and adding solid dose of dark, apocalyptic noise to the heavy orchestrations. Maybe a wee bit "manufactured" sounding at times, but easy to overlook based on the strength of the material. For fans of Wappenbund, Melek-Tha and the like.. $14.33

Locrian - Territories ( Small Doses: Dose89)
Co-released by BloodLust! Territories is the second studio full-length from Locrian. The album was recorded in January 2009, at Phantom Manor Studios in Chicago, IL, and it features a group of collaborators including Blake Judd (Nachtmystium, Twilight), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Andrew Scherer (Velnias), and Mark Solotroff (Anatomy of Habit, BLOODYMINDED). André Foisy and Terence Hannum have spent the last several years honing the Locrian sound and they have taken elements from noise, power-electronics, drone, and black metal to come up with a truly unique approach that reflects the sprawling urban decay that surrounds them in Chicago. After nearly two dozen releases, they have found themselves in the world of "Territories." For this release, Locrian has pulled out all of the stops and they have fleshed out the band with the help of Mark Solotroff on vocals and synthesizer, Blake Judd on guitar, Bruce Lamont on saxophone and vocals, and Andrew Scherer on drums. The results of this massive collaborative effort are apparent from the moment that the album starts. The textures run darker and deeper; the vocals -- sometimes three layers deep -- seem to be conjured from the decrepit muck of a failed civilization; the feedback takes on a more pronounced presence; and the augmented line-up allows for full-on black metal assaults that burst out of the tortured drones that Locrian have come to be known for. Truly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, "Territories" may well be the most fully realized form of Locrian’s dystopian vision. As with their previous album, "Drenched Lands" (2009, At War With False Noise and Small Doses - CD; BloodLust! - LP), "Territories" was skillfully mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service, and the sound could not be more monumental.. $5.00

Lost Kingdom - As the New Dawn Awakes ( Waerloga: WAER011)
Debut album of the Swedish duo (brothers Daniel and Mikael Tjernberg) for our friends at the dark fantasy label Waerloga. The music is neoclassical, leaning towards Strauss but also Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, Verdi, Brahms, Dvorák, Tjajkovskij and Mahle, with hints of modernism. True classic orchestrations here, with no martial overtones (since most of you probably expect that when you see the term neo-classical)...just baroque, romantic, flowing melodies, sometimes soothing, other times veering off into more dramatic areas. Check it out at www.myspace.com/lostkingdommusic. $5.00

Lost Kingdom - Meant For Great Things ( Waerloga: WAER07)
Lost Kingdom's second installment "Meant for Great Things" is a truly great step in the right direction. The 9 tracks are thematically centered around a medieval tale, which unfolds in with epic full orchestra arrangements mixed with music for chamber ensemble and more intimate sections. Simon Kolle, the man behind bands such as Za Frûmi and Musterion (and more) have mastered this jewel of an album. The two Tjernberg brothers, that are Lost Kingdom, have done a more dramatic and powerful sounding songs this time around. Still it's neo-classical but this time the theme is hinted in the tracklist. Expect drama, war and tragedy. But also many beautiful pieces which are like magical gems on this fantastic album.. $5.00

Luasa Raelon - Into the Void CD ( Crucial Blast: Bliss24)
"Concert Industriel Pour Orgue" is an extensive composition in quasi-oratorial form, in final version abbreviated and restructuralised. Classical form is here only in contours. The opus is characterised by thematic spurts, erupting in desultory pulses and, exhausted, dying away in a mass of industrial sounds, without consequent ending of idea. The industrial matrix is also a space and energy source for volcanic activity. The solo role of the organ is surprisingly not dominant and its parts are often taken over by other instruments, giving the highlighted church atmosphere of the composition. Ltd x 435 copies in an outsized textured sleeve with artcard.. $4.00

Lull - Like A Slow River ( Glacial Movements: GM004)
After a long period of silence, Glacial Movements Records is glad to announce the return of one the most important representatives of ambient isolationist music ever: the wonderful English artist Mick J. Harris aka LULL (Scorn, Painkiller, Napalm Death).Unquestionable genius of the last century's second half European music and point of reference about the rising isolationist aesthetics, being on the same wavelength as post-rock last scenaries. "Like a Slow River" it's a work characterized by sharp and minimal atmospheres but also dark, cold and huge such as big bodies of ice which slowly move carried by an endless river. The five compositions of "Like a Slow River" reach the high expectations of the previous works such as "Cold Summer", "Continue" and the "Murder Ballads" trilogy with Martin Bates. With no doubt, this is the coldest and darkest work ever composed by this pioneer of industrial-ambient music. You all will be led to the oblivion of your existence....the freezing darkness of these glacial night is going to come down on your bodies and minds....you'll fall in your deepest sleep with the far echo of glacial runnings........the way to eternity is in front of you...... $11.00

Lull/Beta Cloud/Andrew Liles - Circadian Rhythm Disturbance Reconfigured ( Cold Spring: CSR139CD)
From England to the United States and back again... it all started as a simple drone project between LULL (aka Mick Harris of Scorn, ex-Napalm Death) and BETA CLOUD (aka Carl Pace), based on the concept of how insomnia can effect your thought patterns. Billows of powerful bass drones set to indistinct flourishes of temporary insanity. The original track is there, but also included is a fierce remix track by legendary sound artist Andrew Liles (NURSE WITH WOUND). Fans of Lull and Beta Cloud will really sink their teeth into this one; what Liles has created here is not a simple remix but a raging, deconstruction as only he can do. Originally released as a limited 3" CD in 2008, now proudly presented in a deluxe digipak edition with stunning new artwork. A captivating listen for dark ambient and harsh noise fans alike.. $12.00

Lux Interna - Absence and Plenum ( Eis and Licht: Rex190)
Lux Interna admirably surprised us with their first work, adding an elegant and delightful sensorial touch to the sweet and acid singsong of dark folk. In the following, they were hence to pass the painful proof of their veritable first album, cornerstone of a career in the making. This obligatory test, a two-edged sword, shows the Americans in best form, however, nobly clearing the suicidal obstacle of undue repetition, confirming in the act all the good things we already thought about them. Far from being a mere successor to the charming "Truth and Beauty and all their Severity", "Absence and Plenum" explores a world that is certainly known, yet does so with blinding freshness and serenity. Their compositions are clear and limpid, reduced to the essential, finding their own way and originality. There are still those beautiful reminiscences to the Swans, Backworld, Current 93, or Leonard Cohen, or else Nick Cave, but Lux Interna's music lives by itself, without worrying anymore about its references, so that, eventually, it becomes an incontestable and unavoidable reference itself. A magnificent folk music, sombre and melancholic, where the acoustic guitar competes with the piano and the discreet percussions. Joshua's voice, grave and paternal, fills the compositions by itself, more and more seconded by Kathryn's, sweet and fragile. The titles gracefully succeed each other, a timeless and enchanting folk, occasionally followed by more martial and intense pieces ("Hunter of Echoes"), or interrupted by various samples gathered from different cities (Sarajevo, Krakow, Budapest) on the occasion of their past travels. The texts written by Joshua have gained an increased intensity, touching his preferred themes, be it love, religion, gods, Nature, the seasons, death, life, our powers, or our contradictions. An essential album which buries a period in order to better live a salutary, beneficial resurrection, at the growing light of a music that is rich and intense, beautiful and eternal. Lux Interna have also accomplished the rare feat of renewing themselves with panache, in all modesty, when unveiling their luxuriant inner world to us.. $8.00
