Maciek Szymczuk & Slowtion - Ways ( Zoharum: Zohar24-2)
Collaborative work between Poland's Maciek Szymczuk and Julian Coope "hiding" behind the name Slowtion. 11 thoughtfully composed tracks that utilize field recordings, some slight glitchy elements, and swaths of milky warm and ethereal dark ambience augmented by occasional female vocals and touches of the exotic and ritual (think Rapoon perhaps?). Really hard to shove this into any sort of genre, and I won't even try, but it will and should appeal to those looking to explore their musical boundaries.. $12.00

Maculatum - The Nameless City ( Malignant: TumorCD59)
The Nameless City is the debut of Maculatum, the much anticipated collaborative project of Malignant dark ambient stalwarts Collapsar and Rasalhague. 6 tracks of visionary and cinematic black ambience based on Lovecraftian mythology, populated by unseen cosmic horrors and shapeless forms. The sound here is vast and luminous, and yet simultaneously menacing and oppressive…swirls of sprawling drones infused with ethereal murk and a steady stream of richly textured percussion, cavernous creaks, terrifying rituals, and heavily reverbed, ghostly vocalizations that arise from deep within the jungle and ruins of an ancient civilization. This is exactly what you want in a collaboration such as this…the best aspects of both Collapsar and Rasalhague brought together, without sounding derivative of either project. Limited to just 500 copies, in slim, fold out eco-wallet, this is of course a must for all those that appreciate dark ambience that goes beyond the realms of the ordinary.. $9.00

Maeror Tri - Emotional Engramm ( Zoharum: Zohar034)
The reissue of a long-forgotten classic Maeror Tri album with stunning new artwork and newly remastered sound. Back in 1997, it turned out to be the last album by this experimental trio of German droners . During their nine-year existence, they recorded a handful of albums and cassettes with their unique mixture of minimalism, industrial, ambient and drone, exploring the brains of potential listeners. "Emotional Engramm” is Maeror Tri's most refined effort to date. After years of experimenting, the group came to a characteristic sound composed of layers of electrically/electronically-treated acoustic instruments, with their organic sound achieving it's most accessible form on "Emotional Engramm”. Clocking in at just under 80 minutes, the seven tracks presented here show Maeror Tri at its best. The reissue is presented in a lavish 6-panel digipak designed by Marcin Lojek (Ibsen Design, New Nihilism label, Mantichora and Schmerz bands) with a foreword by Martyn Bates (Eyeless in Gaza). The album has been faithfully remastered by Lukasz Miernik (Dead Cat Mastering).. $12.66

Maeror Tri - The A.V.E. Tapes/Live in Nevers ( Zhelezobeton: ZHB-XXX)
Four extracts from the (almost) legendary 12 hour performance MT gave in Arnhem, Netherlands, on the 11th of November, 1995, plus another extract recorded at the "Musique Ultimes" festival in Nevers, France, 14th May 1995. These are the last unpublished recordings by MT before evolving in Troum, and they represent the band at their most dynamic - a swirling, colossus of drones, hypnotic, effects laden noise, and deep reverberating pulsations aided by the live acoustics, which add a rougher, raw edge to overall throb of sound. Lots of sampled vocals and segments, evolving in a cinematic fashion, becoming more delerious & angst ridden as it proceeds (particularly on the haunting 9th track, Pain).. Inspired by the movie Johnny Got His Gun. Fits nicely among label mates Propergol and Radiodrama, but also with some similarities to Navicon.. $11.66

Maldur Atai - Checkpoint ( Autarkeia: ACD047)
Debut CD for this rising Lithuanian industrial ambient project. The recent vinyl releases suggested good things to come and for the most part, Maldur Atai delivers with an hours worth of material, most of it in the heavily atmospheric vein. There's Deutsch Nepal reference points here (or, to be more vague, perhaps early CMI will suffice), but also maybe Burning Flesh era Inade - dark, sweeping, currents of sound that build and grow as the track progresses, interspersed with samples, and rhythmic pulsations. It's definitely not as polished as either of the aforementioned projects, but the core ingredients are in place, and you can tell that there's great things to come from this project., so you may as well jump on the bandwagon early! Lmtd 300.. $13.33

Maldur Atai - Verger ( Autarkeia: ACD060)
3rd CD in quick succession from the suddenly prolific Maldur Atai. Offers heavy and malevolent atmospherics, as swarming, pitch black tones meld with slabs of insidious electronics, disembodied voices, and sturdy, industrial clank. Think Deutsch Nepal (this even comes with a neighing horse sample!) and early Inade as reference points, and you have a recipe for a pretty kick ass record. My favorite of their releases!. $13.66

Manasuna - Breath Beyond ( Rage in Eden: Rage92)
The mid-nineties saw a surge of ethno-ambient releases from the likes of Life Garden, O Yuki Conjugate, a lot of releases on Extreme, etc etc. Since then, it's seemingly pretty been dormant, unless it exists outside of "industrial culture" and I remain unaware, which is probably a more likely scenario. At any rate, Rage In Eden has gone outside of where they normally operate for this release, delving into what could be classified as world music, where modern electronics intersect with traditional and classic ethnic instrumentation. Unusual sensitivity of the musicians and openness to search new musical horizons allows them to create a band with a wide spectrum of sounds and musical interpretation. Instruments used by Manasuna (Monsoon) include: sitar, taus, Persian santur, saz, Australian didgeridoo, classical cello, violin, drums and flutes from around the world, resulting in a diverse, layered tapestry of sounds.. $14.33

Delirious, surreal atmospheres filled with disembodied female voices and sounds, forged in an almost fractured, collaged manner with haunting melodies and creepy, nightmare infused noises drifting in and out of the mix. Martin Bladh - Umbilical Cords ( Segerhuva: Seger10)
Segerhuva hereby presents the first solo recordings of Martin Bladh, who also resides in the acclaimed avantgarde group IRM and the more experimental unit Skin Area. This is a highly personal recording, which takes some firm mature steps further into physical essence and digs deep into the walls of the mothers utero with its hypnotic drones and drenching layers of organic sounds from cymbals, string instruments, accordion and bass, all treated with great care and respect. Instrumental throughout, bicephalous in the way of screeching, shuddering sounds and drowsy in opposition. There is something strangely slippery about the recordings, a frightening, obtuse atmosphere embedded in silk and soft controlled feedback. Intense
in a slow, burning, penetrating kind of way.. $14.33

Martin Bladh & Bo I. Cavefors - The Island of Death CD/Booklet ( Freak Animal: FAMBBC01)
New album of Martin Bladh certainly ranks as one of his more challenging. Many of theknown elements here though; amazing tones of bow / stringinstruments, the distressed yell vocals known from IRM, usage of samples/spokenword collages like on "Dirge", rhythms, musical patterns and electronicnoise. But simply, everything goes further, leaving all expectations behind what should qualify as a "genre album". Less of the noise and more experimental, disturbing elements, often avoiding playing it safe. This work is mostdefinitely recommended for anyone who wants to hear albums that stand out. Packaged in dvd case with full color cover and full color 24 pages booklet including Bladh's unique collages and Cavefors' texts.. $16.66

Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light ( Hypnos: HSS27)
The Phantom Light is the third release in Hypnos' Matt Borghi reissue series. Originally issued in an edition of only 30 copies in 2006, this Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue will be the first opportunity for this recording to be heard by most Borghi listeners. The four long pieces exhibit Borghi's characteristic simplicity and restraint. Matt says: The Phantom Light is a work that’s comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern Great Lakes. The works are inspired by sailor’s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These “phantom” lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed. In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi’s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work. Peaceful and delicate ambient soundscapes, with slowly shifting pastoral textures and drones.. $5.00

Maurizio Bianchi/Mauthausen Orchestra - Material Modulations ( Old Europa Café: OECD165)
Second and final collaborative work by MB [Maurizio Bianchi] & MO [Mauthausen Orchestra], recorded before the premature departure of Pierpalo Zoppo, the man behind Maurhausen Orchestra (R.I.P.). I'm always a bit wary of releases like this, since they generally never deliver what you want or expect, at least based on historical output, and let's face it, both acts have been hit or miss with more recent output. So, I'm quite pleased to say, this delivers the goods, for the most part, with a roaring churn of distortion, factory din, loops, and atmospheric "noise" that's constantly in motion. A few other tracks aren't quite as dynamic - more wispy, piercing tones and singular frequency modulations, but still with that sense of decay.. $14.33

MB & MO - Spiritual Noises ( Old Europa Café: OECD155)
Collaborative project between these two Italian industrial legends! To quote: ""Creating noise is determined by the presence of an original particle to which randomly apply an alteration to convey a voltage-activated disturbing that determinates the electro-phonic perturbation. As a result we obtain the SPIRITUAL NOISES". Err, OK...I guess I can hear that. Mostly I hear 5 "decompositions" comprised of syncopated, looping , morphing repetitions and locked grooves, noise effects, and buried melodies slathered or lightly spiced with distortion and a touch of grime. Definitely lo-fi, and perhaps not sonically all that stimulating, but like a lot of MB and MO, more about setting the mood.. $14.77

M.B./Peter Andersson/Nordvargr/Jarl - S.F.A.G./S.F.A.G. Decomposed 2CD ( Old Europa Café: OECD134)

In the early 90's Tegal Records released a non-authorised "truncated" version on CD, but this new version on OEC maintains the integrity of the entire work and was completely digitally remastered. Even more exciting however, is the 2nd CD, which features three "de-compositions" courtesy of Erik Jarl (Jarl), Nordvargr, and Peter Andersson (Raison d'Etre), using extracts of the original S.F.A.G. recordings . McKaras - Right to Stay Bestial! ( Autarkeia: ACD032)
The tracks of the album Right to Stay Bestial! have been recorded at least thirteen years ago. It travelled through the hands of lovers of dark electronics, among the Lithuanian underground people, in the form of a re-recorded CDr. Everyone admired the depressing atmosphere, spite and sterile aggression of this disc. Today, the album author McKaras (McWAR) newly interpreted the old tracks, complemented them with a number of various samples and produced a new master. The results is an esp. fine, newly sounding album, the style of which can hardly be defined. Some may think it is hard techno, yet dancing is hardly possible to this rhythmic music. Gloomy atmosphere, aggressive rhythms, psychedelic loops will push the audience into heavy criminal and politically incorrect mood. The album is ideally suited for listening in the car driven towards criminal purposes. However, bear in mind the punishment, will you? Mckaras is to techno as Darkthrone is to black metal perhaps?? Mekanorganik - How to Extract Sunlight From Cucumbers ( Neuropa: NRP26)
'How To Extract Sunlight From Cucumbers' is the debut album of the Belgian post industrial music formation MekanOrganiK, featuring three members of the well-known industrial percussion band MILITIA: Frank Gorissen, Sandra Janssen and Frank Van Hoof. They play rhythmic music using a combination of conventional instruments (percussion, guitar, effects, sequencer, wind instruments...) mixed with tools, machines and 'organic materials' such as wood, water, sand, stones, bones and skulls, glass and even cucumbers. The music of the album is based on the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, the main character in Jonathan Swift's book 'Gulliver's Travels', which is a great and sophisticated satire of human nature based on Swift's experience of his times. 'Gulliver's Travels' is an anatomy of human nature and society and so is the music of MekanOrganiK. Stylistically, expect some resemblance at times to Militia (particularly in the sort of pulsating, rhythmic churn displayed in periodic tracks, such as Air Turbulence Machine, This Forest is Floating, or Biomechanoid), though this comes off as ultimately more experimental and psychedelic, offering a somewhat bizarre collection of textures, percussion, and noises. That being said, this has a great, hypnotic flow that begs to be listened to from start to finish. A nice companion to Militia, particularly when Neuropa has promised new work from them in the coming year. Cool, eh? I'm actually jealous.. $15.33

Melek-Tha - Apokalypsia ( Necrocosm: Necro004)
Not new, but one we missed the first time around. The formula's been established, so if you've heard other Melek-Tha releases, than you pretty much know what to expect - dark and sinister apocalyptic sounds, with ominous orchestral tones and hellish atmospheres. At least parts of this are more ambient than some of the other stuff I remember hearing from Lord Evil, and for the most part, it really works. I'm not entirely sure why Melek-Tha doesn't get a lot of respect - maybe it's the sample heavy nature and blatant plagariasm of their early years, but I can't find too much at fault with this stuff.. $4.00

Militia - Archive Collection 1996-1997 ( Neuropa: NRP27)
The first chapter of Militia's Archive Collection takes us back to their 1996-1997 recordings. Hard to believe it's been 14 years since I first reviewed some of these for Audio Drudge, and while it doesn't have quite the same impact it did back then, they definitely stand the test of time. The disc holds six tracks taken from the monumental 'War Against Society' compilation, the 'Pain/Familiedrama' tracks featuring Con-Dom and Laura Maes and ends with the 'Kingdom Of Our Lord' mcd. All tracks were previously released by the now defunct German cult-label Praxis Dr. Bearmann and serve as a nice appetizer for Militia's upcoming album 'Power, Propaganda, Production!'. For those that need an introduction to the Miltia sound (after all, they haven't been models of productivity the last few years), they are Belgian industrial-percussion group with anarchic leanings, creating intricate and intoxicating soundscapes built around persistent and surging rhythms, samples, vocal proclamations, and layers of electronics and wind instrumentation. An essential piece of industrial nostalgia!!. $15.33

Mind & Flesh - Martyr Generation ( Nuit Et Brouillard: Force007)
"Martyr Generation" is the first CD by the Oslo / Norway based musician Anders B. under the Mind & Flesh moniker. While initial recordings of his first industrial band, Katabol Process were done in summer 1996, Anders started to compose alone under the name Babyflesh around October 1998. Starting from that point, two full-length releases were recorded and produced: "Curiosity killed the Angel", CD-R on Slaughter Prod. in November 2002 and "New Wave of Cynicism", CD on Vendlus Records in February 2005. Sometime in 2010, Anders B. decided to change the name into Mind & Flesh as he lost any connection with what could refer to "Babyflesh" as a name for a musical project. The nine tracks of "Martyr Generation" were recorded between 2005 and 2008. Among them two feature collaborations with other musicians. The music of Mind & Flesh is a mix of dark & heavy analogue electronics and pounding rhythms with processed vocals. His sound can be filled under the Death Industrial genre, without any doubt. Hypnotic and powerful at the same time.Comes in a nicely designed three-panel digipack in a limited edition of 500 copies.. $13.00

Mono-amines, as they appear in neurochemistry, are crucial in bringing the brain to a state of adrenaline and euphoric rush. Musically, Mono-Amine is Joost Gransjean's intense and adventurous music project and live-act which is based in the Hague (NL). Joost started performing live in 1997 and since 2004 has released 12 inch singles/eps and albums on various labels. As Mono-Amine he has created his own style of music; dark, distorted, layered, straight in your face and with a sick fresh groove. all inspired by his critical view of society..Joost's keeps things suspenseful though his disparate musical experience. experience that includes (but not limited to) acid techno, hardcore and industrial. This is coupled with his prolific club experience that brings out an even more varied sound. The end result is relentless rhythm and escalating walls of sound. complex and fast paced drum work lead into barrages of rhythmic noise - heavily textured synth waves and vicious samples intertwine into the layers of a constantly evolving, shifting percussive aural world. This is a skillfully made album that is very suitable for fans of raw technoid industrial or even drum 'n noise focussed sound.. $14.50

Mors Sonat - Comforts in Atrocity ( Crucial Blast: CBR92)
Though the name may be new, those who explore the more terrifying sounds found at the intersection where black metal, industrial noise, power electronics and black ambiance meet surely know the minds behind this collaboration. Featuring Mories (of Gnaw Their Tongues / Aderlating / Cloak Of Altering / De Magia Veterum infamy) and Australian black noise/metal technician Nekrasov, Mors Sonat sounds little like their other projects, crafting a cold, hallucinatory strain of aural dread that draws from a strange mixture of twilight chamber music, ghastly death industrial sounds, harsh electronic noise and gleaming dark ambient, while tapping into the sort of psychic unease and violent chaos that will be familiar to fans of their previous efforts. It's definitely a much more atmospheric and often subdued sonic terrain that Mors Sonat explores on 'Comforts In Atrocity'. Across the six long tracks, they blend together darkly gorgeous chamber music sounds (aided by guest cellist Aaron Martin,) with blasts of excoriating black noise, pools of cloudy dark ambiance, clanking industrial horror, and vicious bouts of power electronics-style abuse. Recommended to fans of everything from Funerary Call and Nordvargr's blackened electronics, Shinjuku Thief's 'Witch Trilogy', and Cold Meat-style death industrial, the Cd edition presented in a six panel digipack.. $10.00

Mourmansk150 - La Guerre, L'Anarchie et le Chaos ( Nilbymouth: NBMCD17)
Love this quote from Heathen Harvest to sum this up: "La Guerre, L'Anarchie et le Chaos" delivers a renewed, relentless, manifesto of cultural terrorism via harsh frequencies and heavy mutations, bred on urban laboratories boiling of Molotov cocktails and ultra-violence. " Perfectly put. Politically charged, hardcore power electronics that boils over with aggression and hate, including a viral attack on the head of Freak Animal entitled "Fuk Miko Aspa". Don't know what that's all about...I got nothing but respect for one of the most uncompromising individuals in the world of extreme music. Regardless, one of the more intense records I've heard in the last year or so.. $8.00

Mulm - The End of Greatness ( Cyclic Law: 40thCycle)
"The End of Greatness" combines the talents of 3 of Norway's most respected Ambient acts, namely Northaunt, Avsky and Taphephobia. After a few years of collaborative work, we are presented with a very special joint project, where each members brought their own approach to atmospheric sound creation into a cohesive, mesmerizing whole. Each drawing inspiration from personal experiences to present their common view of the world, these observations were instinctively translated in the form of 6 dreamy and utterly bleak ambient compositions where guitar drones merge flawlessly with abstract soundscapes, all with a distinctive northern touch. The music comes accompanied by a carefully chosen collection of monochrome photographs giving a glimpse into a seemingly depopulated world, where some are still searching yet where all seems lost.Edition of 500 copies in gatefold textured digi sleeve with 12 pages booklet.. $12.66

Murderous Vision - Ghosts of the Soul Long Lost DCD ( Live Bait: LBRF022)
Ghosts of the Soul Long Lost is the title used to harness out of print, rare and unreleased archival material by long standing dark industrial act Murderous Vision. This second volume in the series contains two full length albums and bonus tracks that showcase the more Death Ambient and Neo-Classical side of the project. Disc one is an unreleased album written and recorded from 2006-2008 called "Cathartic Drifts in a Sea of Sadness". Sonically this slab of melancholia features many elements familiar to the Murderous Vision sound, plus some new elements and a much more composed overall sound. Showcasing the neo-classical elements in the forefront with a grinding underbelly of post-industrial textures and demonic vocal drifts. Features 2 bonus tracks, not included on the original release. Mystified - Passing Through the Outer Gate: Eulogy Series Vol. 1 ( First Fallen Star: FFS005)
Through the end of all things is a new beginning found! The Eulogy Series challenges musicians to create the soundtrack to nothing less than their own death, transition, and afterlife, as they see it in their own mind and in accordance with their personal beliefs - a task found by many to be emotionally monumental and intensely difficult! Well-known for short and mid-length releases on innumerable record labels around the world, Thomas Park (Mystified) has met this challenge by creating a full-length album that is worlds apart from his previous releases in both maturity and complexity, and in doing so has opened a new chapter in his own history as a musician. Having collaborated in the past with artists such as Robin Storey (of Rapoon) and Nigel Ayers (of Nocturnal Emissions), and possessing DJ skills worthy of note in Spin Magazine (11/2000), there was no question as to whether or not the potential for such a personal album existed; only through what form it would be birthed! As his body dies and his soul embarks on a timeless journey through an increasingly strange series of gates toward a place of final rest, we find that Thomas` aural vision is crafted with not only spiritual transcendence of this physical world, but also with transcendence of the narrow genres typically used to classify musicians. Ambient and dark ambient soundscapes alike are deftly populated by neo-classical elements, occasionally with an experimental twist! There are no comparisons to other musicians or albums, as this album and the journey within are distinctly those of Mystified.Presented in an A5 digipak with silver foil-embossed lettering and a specially die-cut cover of a coffin-shaped hole. $8.00
