Machinefabriek - Vloed ( Cold Spring: CSR138)
 |
'Vloed' is a collection of (slightly edited) live performances, recorded between 2006 and 2008 in Amsterdam and Den Haag. "All performances find Machinefabriek in fine form, offering up thick billows of warm guitar shimmer, fluttery staticky ambience, and at one point some uncharacteristically heavy super distorted metallic guitar, but here, it's not so much metal as simply a mighty drone, thick and throbbing and super intense. There are long stretches of near silence and super minimal high end drone, glimmering slow building crescendos, squalls of distorted choral buzz, warm whirring metallic reverberations, shimmery and dense black dronemusik, all the stuff we love about Machinefabriek" (Aquarius). Beautifully remastered with a 20-minute bonus track, 'Vloed' captures the immersive live experience of a Machinefabriek concert. Presented in a stunning matt digipak with modified artwork.. $12.77

Macronympha - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ( Trash Ritual: Trash050)
 |
The long-awaited CD reissue of this LP, originally released by Praxis Dr. Bearmann in 1995—one of the key foundations of the contemporary direction of noise. "Rusted Steel And Rotted Flesh" is restored to its full, uncut length (just under 45 minutes). "Western Pennsylvania is a graveyard. No ideas or worthwhile activities exist in this decaying nightmare of horror and stupidity. Just hatred and broken lives. The native population is an indigenous mutation of inbred sickness and mental corruption. Someday everyone and everything here will die a miserable death. That day cannot come soon enough." Edition of 500 copies. For me, one of the seminal noise recordings. Classic stuff, though you'll miss the full out poster that came with the original. $11.66

The first cd collection of early era Macronympha featuring seven tracks from 1990-1993. Previously unreleased and limited release recordings are combined to form an album focusing on the raw early 90's material mixing rhythmic looping noise with heavy freeform freakouts for an hour of shifting, layered and dynamic chunks of distortion, metal and feedback. This a necessary addition to any Macronympha collection. Recorded by Rodger Stella and Joe Roemer between 1990-1993 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and compiled by Stella from his original master tapes with the assistance of Dan Johansson. Essential raw early 90's American noise.. $13.66

Maldur Atai - Checkpoint ( Autarkeia: ACD047)
 |
Debut CD for this rising Lithuanian industrial ambient project. The recent vinyl releases suggested good things to come and for the most part, Maldur Atai delivers with an hours worth of material, most of it in the heavily atmospheric vein. There's Deutsch Nepal reference points here (or, to be more vague, perhaps early CMI will suffice), but also maybe Burning Flesh era Inade - dark, sweeping, currents of sound that build and grow as the track progresses, interspersed with samples, and rhythmic pulsations. It's definitely not as polished as either of the aforementioned projects, but the core ingredients are in place, and you can tell that there's great things to come from this project., so you may as well jump on the bandwagon early! Lmtd 300.. $8.00

Manifest - Reunion Psyche CDr ( Shadowgraph: Shadow03)

Delirious, surreal atmospheres filled with disembodied female voices and sounds, forged in an almost fractured, collaged manner with haunting melodies and creepy, nightmare infused noises drifting in and out of the mix. Hard to find a real comparison here, but there’s definitely a nod to the dada-istic sound manipulation of Nurse With Wound.. $3.66

Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light ( Hypnos: HSS27)
 |
The Phantom Light is the third release in Hypnos' Matt Borghi reissue series. Originally issued in an edition of only 30 copies in 2006, this Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue will be the first opportunity for this recording to be heard by most Borghi listeners. The four long pieces exhibit Borghi's characteristic simplicity and restraint. Matt says: The Phantom Light is a work that’s comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern Great Lakes. The works are inspired by sailor’s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These “phantom” lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed. In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi’s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work. Peaceful and delicate ambient soundscapes, with slowly shifting pastoral textures and drones.. $5.00

Here at last is a deserved and “rightful” CD re-release of this collaboration created in 2007 by Maurizio Bianchi and Craig Hilton. Until now this recording was only made available in a very limited CD-R edition. Extremely dark atmospheres, restless and dramatic, with shimmering masses of metallic noises, showers of vibrant frequencies, and pulsating substrates of low frequencies, mixed with magmatic agglomerates of more processed sounds of an unrecognizable nature.. $6.00

M.B./Peter Andersson/Nordvargr/Jarl - S.F.A.G./S.F.A.G. Decomposed 2CD ( Old Europa Café: OECD134)

A two CD set, disc 1 originally released on Broken Flag as a tape with the title "S.F.A.G. 81". In the early 90's Tegal Records released a non-authorised "truncated" version on CD, but this new version on OEC maintains the integrity of the entire work and was completely digitally remastered. Even more exciting however, is the 2nd CD, which features three "de-compositions" courtesy of Erik Jarl (Jarl), Nordvargr, and Peter Andersson (Raison d'Etre), using extracts of the original S.F.A.G. recordings . Some really incredible stuff too, with all three artists really adding a whole new element of complexity and layers, yet adhering to the original feel and mood. Awesome!!. $15.99

Megaptera - Extended Chaos 2CD Box ( Autarkeia: ACD015)
 |
Megaptera is back again with yet another release to celebrate the 15 years anniversary. The new release is titled Extended Chaos and consists of re-issues of two early and classic releases, the Near Death cassette and the Beautiful Chaos mCD. Near Death was Megapteras first official release back in 1991 on CMIs side-label Sound Source and is also the first release with Peter Nyström as an official member of the band. Near Death is also the first and last release with all three members! Using drummachine, various synthezisers, movies, TV, radio and microphones they created a gritty, analog driven, horror filled entity that would, at least in part, trigger a whole death industrial movement. For Extended Chaos, 3 bonus tracks are added from the same period. The second disc is a re-release of the 1998 4-track MCD Beautiful Chaos, that was released by Fever Pitch Music. This time it's extended to 10 tracks. Extra material is the two classic tracks Shadowland and Sodom from the Death Odors-compilation and the two tracks from the In the Buchers Backyard-compilation. And to top things off, the CD ends with a bombastic remix of the acopolyptic Final Day, courtesy of The Protagonist, and a 9 min extended version of Shadowland, remixed by Peter Nyström and Magnus Sundström. The sound of Beautiful Chaos is structured, percussion heavy, and oppressively dark and to me, remains one of Megapteras finest moments. . Both discs are mastered by Magnus Sundström.Gold CDs in fold out digipak with nice heavy sleeve. Lmtd 500 copies. $28.00

Mekanorganik - How to Extract Sunlight From Cucumbers ( Neuropa: NRP26)
 |
'How To Extract Sunlight From Cucumbers' is the debut album of the Belgian post industrial music formation MekanOrganiK, featuring three members of the well-known industrial percussion band MILITIA: Frank Gorissen, Sandra Janssen and Frank Van Hoof. They play rhythmic music using a combination of conventional instruments (percussion, guitar, effects, sequencer, wind instruments...) mixed with tools, machines and 'organic materials' such as wood, water, sand, stones, bones and skulls, glass and even cucumbers. The music of the album is based on the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, the main character in Jonathan Swift's book 'Gulliver's Travels', which is a great and sophisticated satire of human nature based on Swift's experience of his times. 'Gulliver's Travels' is an anatomy of human nature and society and so is the music of MekanOrganiK. Stylistically, expect some resemblance at times to Militia (particularly in the sort of pulsating, rhythmic churn displayed in periodic tracks, such as Air Turbulence Machine, This Forest is Floating, or Biomechanoid), though this comes off as ultimately more experimental and psychedelic, offering a somewhat bizarre collection of textures, percussion, and noises. That being said, this has a great, hypnotic flow that begs to be listened to from start to finish. A nice companion to Militia, particularly when Neuropa has promised new work from them in the coming year. Cool, eh? I'm actually jealous.. $15.33

Melek-Tha - Apokalypsia ( Necrocosm: Necro004)
 |
Not new, but one we missed the first time around. The formula's been established, so if you've heard other Melek-Tha releases, than you pretty much know what to expect - dark and sinister apocalyptic sounds, with ominous orchestral tones and hellish atmospheres. At least parts of this are more ambient than some of the other stuff I remember hearing from Lord Evil, and for the most part, it really works. I'm not entirely sure why Melek-Tha doesn't get a lot of respect - maybe it's the sample heavy nature and blatant plagariasm of their early years, but I can't find too much at fault with this stuff.. $4.00

Militia - Archive Collection 1996-1997 ( Neuropa: NRP27)
 |
The first chapter of Militia's Archive Collection takes us back to their 1996-1997 recordings. Hard to believe it's been 14 years since I first reviewed some of these for Audio Drudge, and while it doesn't have quite the same impact it did back then, they definitely stand the test of time. The disc holds six tracks taken from the monumental 'War Against Society' compilation, the 'Pain/Familiedrama' tracks featuring Con-Dom and Laura Maes and ends with the 'Kingdom Of Our Lord' mcd. All tracks were previously released by the now defunct German cult-label Praxis Dr. Bearmann and serve as a nice appetizer for Militia's upcoming album 'Power, Propaganda, Production!'. For those that need an introduction to the Miltia sound (after all, they haven't been models of productivity the last few years), they are Belgian industrial-percussion group with anarchic leanings, creating intricate and intoxicating soundscapes built around persistent and surging rhythms, samples, vocal proclamations, and layers of electronics and wind instrumentation. An essential piece of industrial nostalgia!!. $15.33

Millipede - Powerless ( Hymen: Y789)
 |
A year and a half after 'All My Best Intentions', Don Hill presents his new work 'Powerless' on Hymen records. This album became deeply personal because it was written during a difficult time for Don and his family. 'Powerless' is a musical document of this period, the feelings of powerlessness and continual surrendering to find a strength beyond ones self. this is a story of love, death and resurrection. For the realization of this opus, Don received creative support on each track. Brett Smith (Caul ), Brian Grover (Khadag Blue), Candle Nine, Access to Arasaka, James Church (Lucidstatic), Steve Hall ( Veil ofSecrecy/Yen Pox ), Tony Young (Autoclav1.1), Jan Carleklev (Parca Pace / Sanctum), and Tapage loaned their considerable talents to help tell the story of the vigil Don kept as his family and sons struggled to find meaning in the midst of sadness and uncertainty. Melancholy and introspection are audible on this album, yet there is no despair, but rather hope. Deep idm textures alternate with ambient soundscapes and magnificent synth chords. Complex beats highlight the well-placed electronic structures enriched with piano and guitars. Once again Millipede effortlessly moves between the boundaries of dark ambient and intelligent dance music.. $8.00

Mono-Amine - Do Not Bend ( Ant-Zen: Act247)

Mono-amines, as they appear in neurochemistry, are crucial in bringing the brain to a state of adrenaline and euphoric rush. Musically, Mono-Amine is Joost Gransjean's intense and adventurous music project and live-act which is based in the Hague (NL). Joost started performing live in 1997 and since 2004 has released 12 inch singles/eps and albums on various labels. As Mono-Amine he has created his own style of music; dark, distorted, layered, straight in your face and with a sick fresh groove. all inspired by his critical view of society..Joost's keeps things suspenseful though his disparate musical experience. experience that includes (but not limited to) acid techno, hardcore and industrial. This is coupled with his prolific club experience that brings out an even more varied sound. The end result is relentless rhythm and escalating walls of sound. complex and fast paced drum work lead into barrages of rhythmic noise - heavily textured synth waves and vicious samples intertwine into the layers of a constantly evolving, shifting percussive aural world. This is a skillfully made album that is very suitable for fans of raw technoid industrial or even drum 'n noise focussed sound.. $14.50

Ghosts of the Soul Long Lost is the title used to harness out of print, rare and unreleased archival material by long standing dark industrial act Murderous Vision. This second volume in the series contains two full length albums and bonus tracks that showcase the more Death Ambient and Neo-Classical side of the project. Disc one is an unreleased album written and recorded from 2006-2008 called "Cathartic Drifts in a Sea of Sadness". Sonically this slab of melancholia features many elements familiar to the Murderous Vision sound, plus some new elements and a much more composed overall sound. Musterion - The Wondrous Journey Through the Catacombs of Life ( Horus CyclicDaemon: HCDXI)
 |
The Wondrous Journey Through the Catacombs of Life is the second album of Musterion, following the highly acclaimed debut album The Black Lodge (2005), built upon complex and obscure composition techniques and musical innovation, and it drags the listener on a brilliantly imaginative and frightening journey that combines elements of dark ambient, surrealism, absurdity, Holyism with the help advanced structural and theoretical considerations in terms of the composition. The tale is concerning mind control by psychic, electronic, sexual, pharmaceutical, subliminal, and other means. The story stretches into the absurd and surely Simon AA Kölle exorcising some demons of his own and exploring a musical world where regular music metre is unimportant, where the rhythm of a piece could be dictated by breathless inspiration more than moving pictures (as the case with film music) or to fit a specific genre. Yet he again expands and evolves the genre of dark ambient into art music.Due to the dramatic nature of the music, which is shifting pace of both horror and atmosphere, the only way it would feel real enough included incorporation of organic instruments and electro-acoustic instruments. Improvisations, twisted circus music, industrial parts and many atmospheric moments give way for a highly symbolistic album where all elements are pieces of the broken puzzle.Artwork and design by Niko Skorpio.. $4.00

Mystified - Passing Through the Outer Gate: Eulogy Series Vol. 1 ( First Fallen Star: FFS005)
 |
Through the end of all things is a new beginning found! The Eulogy Series challenges musicians to create the soundtrack to nothing less than their own death, transition, and afterlife, as they see it in their own mind and in accordance with their personal beliefs - a task found by many to be emotionally monumental and intensely difficult! Well-known for short and mid-length releases on innumerable record labels around the world, Thomas Park (Mystified) has met this challenge by creating a full-length album that is worlds apart from his previous releases in both maturity and complexity, and in doing so has opened a new chapter in his own history as a musician. Having collaborated in the past with artists such as Robin Storey (of Rapoon) and Nigel Ayers (of Nocturnal Emissions), and possessing DJ skills worthy of note in Spin Magazine (11/2000), there was no question as to whether or not the potential for such a personal album existed; only through what form it would be birthed! As his body dies and his soul embarks on a timeless journey through an increasingly strange series of gates toward a place of final rest, we find that Thomas` aural vision is crafted with not only spiritual transcendence of this physical world, but also with transcendence of the narrow genres typically used to classify musicians. Ambient and dark ambient soundscapes alike are deftly populated by neo-classical elements, occasionally with an experimental twist! There are no comparisons to other musicians or albums, as this album and the journey within are distinctly those of Mystified.Presented in an A5 digipak with silver foil-embossed lettering and a specially die-cut cover of a coffin-shaped hole. $8.00

It could actually be considered the first real crossover album between the genres.Remastered and extended version of the 1996 album with bonus tracks and alternate takes culled from the original masters. MZ.412 - Macht Durche Stimme ( Dark Vinyl: DVLR7)

CD release of the original Maschinenzimmer 412 LP Classic material that helped define the original CMI sound: bitterly cold and souless machine sounds that reverberate with distortion and agony, growled vocals, and brain rattling percussion. Very heavy and certainly way before it's time.. $13.00
