Machinefabriek - Vloed ( Cold Spring: CSR138)

'Vloed' is a collection of (slightly edited) live performances, recorded between 2006 and 2008 in Amsterdam and Den Haag. "All performances find Machinefabriek in fine form, offering up thick billows of warm guitar shimmer, fluttery staticky ambience, and at one point some uncharacteristically heavy super distorted metallic guitar, but here, it's not so much metal as simply a mighty drone, thick and throbbing and super intense. There are long stretches of near silence and super minimal high end drone, glimmering slow building crescendos, squalls of distorted choral buzz, warm whirring metallic reverberations, shimmery and dense black dronemusik, all the stuff we love about Machinefabriek" (Aquarius). The long-awaited CD reissue of this LP, originally released by Praxis Dr. Bearmann in 1995—one of the key foundations of the contemporary direction of noise. "Rusted Steel And Rotted Flesh" is restored to its full, uncut length (just under 45 minutes). "Western Pennsylvania is a graveyard. No ideas or worthwhile activities exist in this decaying nightmare of horror and stupidity. Just hatred and broken lives. The native population is an indigenous mutation of inbred sickness and mental corruption. Someday everyone and everything here will die a miserable death. That day cannot come soon enough." Maldur Atai - Checkpoint ( Autarkeia: ACD047)

Debut CD for this rising Lithuanian industrial ambient project. The recent vinyl releases suggested good things to come and for the most part, Maldur Atai delivers with an hours worth of material, most of it in the heavily atmospheric vein. There's Deutsch Nepal reference points here (or, to be more vague, perhaps early CMI will suffice), but also maybe Burning Flesh era Inade - dark, sweeping, currents of sound that build and grow as the track progresses, interspersed with samples, and rhythmic pulsations. It's definitely not as polished as either of the aforementioned projects, but the core ingredients are in place, and you can tell that there's great things to come from this project., so you may as well jump on the bandwagon early! Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light ( Hypnos: HSS27)

The Phantom Light is the third release in Hypnos' Matt Borghi reissue series. Originally issued in an edition of only 30 copies in 2006, this Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue will be the first opportunity for this recording to be heard by most Borghi listeners. The four long pieces exhibit Borghi's characteristic simplicity and restraint. Matt says: The Phantom Light is a work that’s comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern Great Lakes. The works are inspired by sailor’s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These “phantom” lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed. In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi’s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work. A two CD set, disc 1 originally released on Broken Flag as a tape with the title "S.F.A.G. 81". In the early 90's Tegal Records released a non-authorised "truncated" version on CD, but this new version on OEC maintains the integrity of the entire work and was completely digitally remastered. Even more exciting however, is the 2nd CD, which features three "de-compositions" courtesy of Erik Jarl (Jarl), Nordvargr, and Peter Andersson (Raison d'Etre), using extracts of the original S.F.A.G. recordings . Some really incredible stuff too, with all three artists really adding a whole new element of complexity and layers, yet adhering to the original feel and mood. Awesome!!. $15.99 Add to Wishlist

Megaptera - Extended Chaos 2CD Box ( Autarkeia: ACD015)

Megaptera is back again with yet another release to celebrate the 15 years anniversary. The new release is titled Extended Chaos and consists of re-issues of two early and classic releases, the Near Death cassette and the Beautiful Chaos mCD. Near Death was Megaptera’s first official release back in 1991 on CMI‘s side-label Sound Source and is also the first release with Peter Nyström as an official member of the band. Near Death is also the first and last release with all three members! Using drummachine, various synthezisers, movies, TV, radio and microphones they created a gritty, analog driven, horror filled entity that would, at least in part, trigger a whole death industrial movement. For Extended Chaos, 3 bonus tracks are added from the same period. The second disc is a re-release of the 1998 4-track MCD Beautiful Chaos, that was released by Fever Pitch Music. This time it's extended to 10 tracks. Extra material is the two classic tracks “Shadowland” and “Sodom” from the Death Odors-compilation and the two tracks from the In the Buchers Backyard-compilation. And to top things off, the CD ends with a bombastic remix of the acopolyptic “Final Day“, courtesy of The Protagonist, and a 9 min extended version of “Shadowland“, remixed by Peter Nyström and Magnus Sundström. The sound of Beautiful Chaos is structured, percussion heavy, and oppressively dark and to me, remains one of Megaptera’s finest moments. . Mekanorganik - How to Extract Sunlight From Cucumbers ( Neuropa: NRP26)

'How To Extract Sunlight From Cucumbers' is the debut album of the Belgian post industrial music formation MekanOrganiK, featuring three members of the well-known industrial percussion band MILITIA: Frank Gorissen, Sandra Janssen and Frank Van Hoof. They play rhythmic music using a combination of conventional instruments (percussion, guitar, effects, sequencer, wind instruments...) mixed with tools, machines and 'organic materials' such as wood, water, sand, stones, bones and skulls, glass and even cucumbers.The music of the album is based on the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, the main character in Jonathan Swift's book 'Gulliver's Travels', which is a great and sophisticated satire of human nature based on Swift's experience of his times. 'Gulliver's Travels' is an anatomy of human nature and society and so is the music of MekanOrganiK. Stylistically, expect some resemblance at times to Militia (particularly in the sort of pulsating, rhythmic churn displayed in periodic tracks, such as Air Turbulence Machine, This Forest is Floating, or Biomechanoid), though this comes off as ultimately more experimental and psychedelic, offering a somewhat bizarre collection of textures, percussion, and noises. That being said, this has a great, hypnotic flow that begs to be listened to from start to finish. A nice companion to Militia, particularly when Neuropa has promised new work from them in the coming year. Cool, eh? I'm actually jealous.. $15.33 Add to Wishlist

Melek-Tha - Apokalypsia ( Necrocosm: Necro004)

Not new, but one we missed the first time around. The formula's been established, so if you've heard other Melek-Tha releases, than you pretty much know what to expect - dark and sinister apocalyptic sounds, with ominous orchestral tones and hellish atmospheres. At least parts of this are more ambient than some of the other stuff I remember hearing from Lord Evil, and for the most part, it really works. I'm not entirely sure why Melek-Tha doesn't get a lot of respect - maybe it's the sample heavy nature and blatant plagariasm of their early years, but I can't find too much at fault with this stuff.. $4.00 Add to Wishlist

Militia - Archive Collection 1996-1997 ( Neuropa: NRP27)

The first chapter of Militia's Archive Collection takes us back to their 1996-1997 recordings. Hard to believe it's been 14 years since I first reviewed some of these for Audio Drudge, and while it doesn't have quite the same impact it did back then, they definitely stand the test of time. The disc holds six tracks taken from the monumental 'War Against Society' compilation, the 'Pain/Familiedrama' tracks featuring Con-Dom and Laura Maes and ends with the 'Kingdom Of Our Lord' mcd. All tracks were previously released by the now defunct German cult-label Praxis Dr. Bearmann and serve as a nice appetizer for Militia's upcoming album 'Power, Propaganda, Production!'. For those that need an introduction to the Miltia sound (after all, they haven't been models of productivity the last few years), they are Belgian industrial-percussion group with anarchic leanings, creating intricate and intoxicating soundscapes built around persistent and surging rhythms, samples, vocal proclamations, and layers of electronics and wind instrumentation. Melancholy and introspection are audible on this album, yet there is no despair, but rather hope. Deep idm textures alternate with ambient soundscapes and magnificent synth chords. Complex beats highlight the well-placed electronic structures enriched with piano and guitars. Mono-amines, as they appear in neurochemistry, are crucial in bringing the brain to a state of adrenaline and euphoric rush. Musically, Mono-Amine is Joost Gransjean's intense and adventurous music project and live-act which is based in the Hague (NL). Joost started performing live in 1997 and since 2004 has released 12 inch singles/eps and albums on various labels. As Mono-Amine he has created his own style of music; dark, distorted, layered, straight in your face and with a sick fresh groove. all inspired by his critical view of society..Joost's keeps things suspenseful though his disparate musical experience. experience that includes (but not limited to) acid techno, hardcore and industrial. This is coupled with his prolific club experience that brings out an even more varied sound.
