Anima Nostra - Atraments CS (Cloister Recordings: Crus33)
Cassette version of Atraments, which includes a bonus demo version of "Solemn Majesty". Pro-dubbed chrome tapes and limited to 100 copies.
Initially the name of a collaborative CD between Henrik Nordvargr Björkk and Margaux Renaudin released on Cold Spring in 2016, the duo have now relabeled and solidified themselves under the Anima Nostra moniker, and in turn, broadly expanded their sonic palette, taking the more intimate ritual ambient aspects of the debut, and incorporating them as part of towering constructs that blur the line between death industrial, doom metal, and neo-classical. With it’s upward swells of foreboding brass, fearsome tribal percussion, and hammering, bass heavy dirge, “Atraments” is the unleashing of something truly monumental and cataclysmic, eclipsing nearly everything Nordvargr has ever been associated with in of scope and grandeur. Integral and prominent in the mix are heavily serrated and imperious vocals, employed to drag the listener inexorably into an inferno of apocalyptic proportions, while adding a more structured “song” element and trumpeting the arrival of an inevitable doom. “Atraments” stands firmly as a vision complete and the perfect soundtrack for times of great tumult.Completed with artwork by Thomas Ekelund (Trepaneringsritualen) and Portugese occult calligrapher Gordoletters. Cassette layout by Eric henderson.. $7.00

Debut release of Finnish band formed in 2015, three songs, 18 minutes of heavy, simple, repetitive and effective music that draws it´s influences from new wave, no wave, noise rock and late eighties industrial rock genres. Common Eider King Eider - Extinction CS (Sol Y Nieve: Syn029)
"A new ritual from this long running doom/drone/ambient collective, offering up modern manifestations of ancient energies, channelled into smouldering swathes of ceremonial hypnosis and explosive gouts of blood-red radiance. Extinction is an extended ceremonial rite conducted below ground at the Wisp House (R.I.P.). A song suite of psychedelic devotionals assembled from reverb drenched industrial drones, billowing clouds of metallic throb, and churning, rhythmic bombast. Fields of ghostly incantations suspended in the ether, draped over metallic murmurs and moaning melancholia. The low end rumble of monk-like chants beneath the soft tangle of keening lamentation. A slowly evolving sensory sacrament, tense and harrowing, punctuated by dense dramatic swells and aching, mournful mantras."
Pro-dubbed, pro-printed, black c44 cassettes with white ink in traditional plastic case with pro-printed 4 panel j-card.. $3.00

Contagious Orgasm - Live at MF 2008 CS (Raubbau: Raub064)
Ten years down the road, it’s time to make available Contagious Orgasm’s live performance at Maschinenfest 2008, and you’ll find it has matured like a good wine: culled mainly from the ‘Ripple’ album Ant-Zen had released the year before, plus some truly mindbending suprises, these 40 minutes represent what is possibly Hiroshi’s boldest foray into ‘accessible’ idm electronica and illbient, while remaining on the experimental side of things for sure. Everyday sounds and field recordings mingle with the sounds of conventional instruments in the shape of sequenced rhythm patterns and melodies. From the krautish opener ‘Neo for’ to the intense minimalism of ‘Smoke’, from the sincerity of ‘tragedy creature’ to the intense, tribal-flavoured finale of ‘Firewalker…’, this is highly emotional, authentic sound art at its best. And in order to top it all off, there’s the addition of two cover versions (not common practice in the genre): the Cure’s ‘Pornography’ recreates the sinister string sounds and drug-induced darkness of the original; and then there’s ‘Die Roboter’ in a completely unique interpretation (exclusive to this release), mixing the signature key line with uneasy sound debris - and what could be more appropriate for the Contagious Orgasm’s intention with this release than the Kraftwerk reference. $7.00

Control - Over Maschinenfest Part II -2015 CS (Raubbau: Raub049)
Collab release between Raubbau and Pflichtkaup featuring material recorded live at MFest2015. Of course, as such, we encounter the inimitable live sound of Control; the multiple layers of sound, the ominously aggressive vocals, the razor-sharp sound quality. But since half of the tracks on this release are culled from his most recent Ant-Zen album ‘In Harm’s Way’, it also reflects Thomas Garrison’s development towards a darker, more atmospheric sound, in which the aggravating emotionality of his tracks unfolds even better. after creating a trademark sound within the power electronics genre for over a decade, control is now exploring a vast space of its own.
The horror is there - it’s man itself. face the facts, accept the truth and let control provide the misanthropic soundtrack with these six cutting edge live cuts.. $8.99

Gnawed/Velvet Curtain - Split CS (Maniacal Hatred: MH10)
Split cassette featuring 5 new tracks from Gnawed and 3 from Velvet Curtain. Naturally, Gnawed's material is killer - dark, atmospheric, and oppressive, yet with the requisite junk metal scrapings, clangor, and vocal presence you've come to expect. First time hearing Velvet Curtain, and truth be told, I don't know much about them, other then it's complimentary material to what Gnawed is doing; sounds of reverbed field recordings, musique concrete, tool box clutter, and metallic chain dragging. Third track ramps up the noise factor with distorted loops and ragged churn. Sounds Finnish or Swedish to me, but I don't think that's the case. Recommended.. $3.00

It Only Gets Worse - Angels CS (Cloister Recordings: CRUS16)
Collaborative project between Matt Finney and Gnaw Their Tongue's Maurice De Jong; "Fusing the moody, jazzy sounds of Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks score with minimal electronic beats and weathered, gruff spoken poetry, Angels expounds upon the despondent roots of Finney and Mories’s earlier works and gives the individual elements more space. The droning, sedated pop syrup bleeds slowly and with purpose, as restrained and calculated as Finney’s truncated prose. The beautiful, calming music belies some very harsh themes, which are expanded further by Finney himself below, which feeds into my earlier conceit of brutality. This is sad, despairing music, and, when given the right context, is difficult to listen to in one sitting. And yet Angels is beautiful, and there are moments in which Mories’s downcast pop electronics, when paired with Finney’s distant, detached presentation, become otherworldly. There are a lot of harsh things in this world, gussied up with flowers and pretty colors, but they only serve as a mask, and the superficial beauty of Angels only makes what it hides all the more hideous". Invisible Oranges. $3.00

It Only Gets Worse - Fireplace Road CS (Cloister Recordings: Crus35)
Never mind the Stone Roses covers, that Ed Harris film and the rest of the dozens of references to Jackson Pollock popular culture has had to offer over the years. Here's It Only Gets Worse with a new concept album based on the great artist's last days before the fatal alcohol-infused car crash that took his life.
Once again the combination of Maurice De Jong and Matt Finney's skills come to full fruition, as the duo presents a dark experimental set of songs, blended with sensibilities that cover a very wide range, from pop music to power electronics. Like it's usually done within the realm of IOGW's craft, the spoken word narration appears a bit more reserved and in smaller quantities compared to Matt's other projects, leaving plenty of room to the musical arrangements and compositions to thrive. On the other hand, Maurice's music feels lighter in comparison with the unbearable heaviness, density and extremity some of the multi-instrumentalist's more recognized aliases have put out in the world, but its sinister qualities lurk under the fragile surface, and are still capable of grabbing the listener with a tight hold.
Like Pollock's drip painting technique, IOGW's creative style is unique, not easy to digest and there's more to it than what's been shown on the exterior. With each additional listen, it only gets better.. $3.00

Michael Idehall - Aion Reborn CS (Raubbau: Raub065)
To those who enjoyed Michael Idehall's 'Prophecies of the Storm' release on Ant-Zen, Raubbau is proud to present a further outing of this outstanding artist's self-coined 'seancetronica' sound exploration - a one-of-a-kind combination of death industrial, apocalyptic tunes with a subliminal song structure and dark, structured ambience. Once again the Swedish producer/performer evokes a crude, vicious force carrying intense tempers of menace, aggression and sadness with a strong streak of esoteric themes and personal poetics shaping the mood and tone. Idehall's rich baritone intoning ritual chants and secretive whispers with a solemn atmosphere, highlight the arcane bent of the heavy electronics pushed with striking tautologic sequences. From sparse throbs and slow paced beats to cinematic ambient elements and industrial overtones, 'Aion Reborn' displays a captivating mixture of alluring vocals, throbbing bass, pounding beats, ominous drones and metallic tremors. An engaging album that provides a gripping and sometimes horrific tale from start to finish where the lack of an easy path for pursuit is part of the experience - hypnotic, forceful and savage. Highly recommended.. $13.50

Phelios - Live in Russia CS (Raubbau: Raub057)
In 2015, Phelios enchanted Russia with his outstanding performance. Nice tracks, the foundation of which are crystal-clear synth pads layered into soundscapes at various shades of dark ambient. Combined with ritualistic drum patterns that pick up the pace in between droning bells, we awake from ‘hibernation’ until we reach ‘Atlantis’ with its soft strings that brush away the last attachments we may have had to planet earth.
For those who already have most of Phelios' creations, two previously unreleased tracks, ‘Timelord’ and ‘Cloud Sector Gamma’ have now found their way on this very record. But whether you are already familiar with Phelios or not - this album simply is a must-have for everyone who appreciates complex ambient music on the highest level.

Salt - Invisible CS (Ant-Zen: Act399)
Noise pop beat massacre with a Japanese green tea infusion it has been done because it’s possible, and because it’s time. Salt needs no introduction for his work as a label owner and graphic artist, but as a music producer has been inactive for over a decade, and surely few musicians come up with their debut album no earlier than almost 30 years down the line. 'Invisible' is truly genre-defying, and not in the usual sense that it incorporates aspects of different genres - it is neither noise nor pop in the sense that it fulfills the usual expectations these terms conjure up. the Japanese infusion (i.e. sonic references) weaves a red thread, the reflection of positive nothingness is the intellectual backbone, and the music might serve as a diary.
'Nothing is Everything', a hum, a metronomic sub-rhythm, distant voices, the track works like a canvas. 'feeling connector' is the closest this will get to pop, an anthem of bittersweet minimal electronica featuring Japanese artist noiseconcrete and the haunting, strangely detached vocal performance of his female partner 3CHI5. so after two tracks the extremes of this album are fathomed, and it’s from there that the 'Massacre' unfolds: undeniably noisy like 'Bbeneath the Skin' or 'Cream Crackered' (which is Cockney slang for incredibly tired), with a wobbly rhythmic backbone like 'Inhale', 'Unhidden Content' and 'Fear of Yellow' - or wildly oscillating between both, like the aptly titled 'After Diner Dip', a point in time when different moments amalgamate. even for the easier sounds of 'Wasuremono' (i.e. lost things) 'Invisible' is not to be taken lightly, and closes with the sinister organ sounds of 'Be All and End All', the Shakespeare-coined phrase that means the raison d’etre, the essence. running at a classic 45 minutes, this Salt album will be nothing to many, but possibly everything.Includes download code in anti-static bag with stickers.. $12.67

STROMSTAD - New Devoted Human CS (Cloister Recordings: Crus32)
Few names imply mind-bending, forward thinking heavy electronics like Finnish stalwarts STROM.ec, and with every release, they seem to further stretch the boundaries of what can be a pretty rigid genre, and navigate realms never before seen or heard. Similar things can be said of Norwegian atmospheric heavy weight and Malignant staple, Kristoffer Oustad, whose particular strain of dark ambient and post-industrial soundscapes are incredibly dynamic, at times surreal and cinematic, other times more driving and heavy, but all with a recognizable, highly emotive touch. Put the two together, and you get the debut of their collaborative project, STROMSTAD. Spread out over 8 tracks, this is a dizzying exploration of sound and vocal fury, where mechanized pulsations, writhing frequency oscillations, and grinding machine loops meet stretches of drifting darkness and touches of musicality, suggestive of a future that’s dystopic and bleak on one hand, yet highly innovative and revolutionary on the other. Featuring a guest appearance by Grutle Kjellson from the mighty Enslaved, mastering by Nordvargr, paintings by Jeff Klena and design by Alonso Urbanos.. $7.00

Totenrune/Insurgence - Split CS (Lost Empire Records: LER-02)
From Noise Receptor Journal:
"Following quickly on the heels of the split with Streicher, Totenrune has returned with another split, but this time with the noise/ industrial project Insurgence, and with the tape being issued on a new French based label.
For Totenrune’s 3 tracks it lead off with a murder confessional sample on ‘Libertine Atonement’ before the raw mass of distorted rumble and heavily treated vocals which provides a rough power electronics slant to the industrial-noise approach, although is also quite laid back in actual sonic agression. Being slightly more tonally forceful, ‘Rapture in Homicide’ then features spitting distortion and loose sense of structure and forward momentum (…although still relatively calm), while the final track ‘Mors Triumphalis’ is built around a prominent grinding loop and looser underpinning echo and rumble (…again being relatively laid back than what might be typically expected). As a general observation when comparing Totenrune’s tracks here to their earlier material on the Streicher split, the mood is more subdued and comes across as being more controlled and considered as a result.
In moving on to Insurgence’s contributions, although not having heard them before I am aware they have been compared to Deathkey, which is a somewhat valid comparison despite not achieving the same over the top fierceness. Regardless of this, the first of 2 Insurgence tracks is ‘Lost Innocence’ and demonstrates a step up in sonic intensity from Totenrune’s contributions. The first segment of the track is based on a prominent ‘stones in a cement mixer’ styled loop (…coupled with samples, static and raw junk metal), before the second segment takes a further step up with blunt-force, churning noise and unhinged vocals (…all force-fed through a feedback grinder and treated with a heavy dose of echo and reverb). The second Insurgence track ‘Shine’ heavily deviates where it commences on ritual industrial routes with chanted vocalisations and cavernous catacomal ambience, before moving back towards to a brutal and chaotic and junk metal noise sound (…complete with shuddering/ burrowing structures and unhinged/ overblown vocals before coming to an abrupt conclusion).. $3.00
