Pacific 231 - 1983-85 Compendium 2CD (Functional: Functional017)
This DCD Compendium is a selective collection of early 80's Pacific 231 works, a project of note who must surely be recognized as one of the early pioneers of industrial and power electronic music. For this release, more than 48 hours of recordings coming from reel-to-reel tapes have been unveiled and carefully converted to recover two hours worth of material. The production has been split in two parts as the 1st CD is Studio and the 2nd is Live. As a matter of interest, for the "Unusual Perversions" fans out there, a good percentage of the archives are circa 1984 and unreleased. Primitive sound exploration and atmospheres featuring mildly corrosive and distorted analogue electronics, industrial klank, and a somewhat limited, yet effective use of hallucinatory manipulations; delay, loops, feedback. Notable as well though for some ambient passages that really hold up pretty well. The influence on acts like Illusion of Safety and The Klinik can definitely be felt here, and quite honestly, this sounds a lot less dated than some other works from the same era.. $13.99

Paranoia Inducta - From the Depths CD (Rage in Eden: Rage117)
"From the Depths” is the final piece in a trilogy preceeded by "Evil Angel" and "Maze of Death". This is the story about loss, loneliness, despair and lack of hope. Manages to capture the post industrial bleakness of the early CMI ambient sound as done by Archona Satani, Inanna, and even Morthound to some degree, yet keeps his own unique sound intact. Eerie, blackened soundscapes, heavy on the reverb, with ritualistic vocal drones, ominous strings, foreboding subterranean clangs and plenty of dank murk. In DVD digipak.. $13.67

Parhelion & Zac Keiller - Farther North CD/DVD (Cyclic Law: 57thCycle)
Farthest North is the result of a musical collaboration between Canada's Parhelion and Australian sound artist Zac Keiller. The idea originated while they both were treading similar thematic ground with their individual projects, mainly, that of using the far north as an artistic muse. The end result of their effort is a record that, through the prism of its authors, focuses on capturing the essence of this extreme landscape, eschewing the romanticized and instead focusing on the stark, cold immensity and volatility of a place located at the ends of the world. Teetering between the hauntingly sparse and the occasionally chaotically dense, the music attempts to mirror the landscape's primitive elements through its sonic interpretations, weaving together both a personal and impersonal narrative drawn from the geography, atmosphere and psychical character of one of the most forlorn realms known to men. Comes with a bonus DVD of a special collage of the album tracks set to abstract nordic landscapes for a uniquely immersive audio visual experience.
Edition of 500 copies in 6 panel Digipack. 7 Tracks. Running Time 43:10. DVD Running Time 21:58. $10.00

PBK/Josh Lay - Collaborative CD (Syndrom Records: Syn005CD)
A new self titled split CD sees the collaboration of two artists on this release for Syndrom Records.
American composer, Phillip B. Klingler, better known as PBK, has been active in the experimental music underground since 1986. His soundwork correlates to electroacoustic, classic industrial and free jazz genres. PBK has fashioned a noise-based music that doesn't rely on power electronics process, but rather, by placing noises themselves into ambient/atmospheric sound environments. His soundworks are composed from turntable manipulation, sampling and analog/digital synthesis. Improvising spontaneously and with little preconception, PBK creates pulsing, echoing, organic soundscapes of unknown sonic origin.
Josh Lay combines his horror-noise approach with PBK's psychedelic synth improvisation into a deep, forbidding soundscape.. $4.00

Penjaga Insaf - Sama Sadja (Power & Steel: PAS27)
For several years Ingo Sauerbrey made extensive travels through Indonesia, always carrying recording equipment to collect sounds as an audio diary. During periodic return trips to Germany, he started to work on the recordings with electronic devices. Some sounds were edited, cut and transformed, while others were kept completely intact. To name a few sound sources only recordings from Water Puppet and Shadow Theatres, Gamelan and various welcoming and fighting dances like Kecak, Jegog and the Tarian Caci were used for this album. Some of those impressive performances were made of 60 to 90 men chanting and dancing while a bamboo orchestra used 4 meter long bamboo sticks playing bass drums on it. Sada SAdja is weaving together the sounds of living traditions, religions and languages with spherical ambient pads and electronically edited drones from the field recordings. This is an contemplative and intimate soundtrack from the deepest heart of South East Asia. LOKI/PaS. $12.67

Phaenon - His Master's Voice (Malignant: TumorCD45)
After the well received debut Submerged, Phaenon follows things up with an even deeper immersion into a world of bleak, isolationist sounds. Whereas Submerged was one long and infinitely expansive drone piece, His Master’s Voice is broken up into four separate, but flowing tracks of sprawling and spacious ambient drift, laced with interstellar disturbances, probing, alien tones and icy shards of celestial debris…a whirling specter of darkness and void-ic space, thematically based upon the 1968 novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem, which is centered around the efforts by scientists to decode, translate and understand a series of extraterrestrial transmissions. As a whole, His Master’s Voice represents a logical progression in Phaenon’s sound and is the ultimate in headphone listening. In gorgeous 6 panel digipak.. $5.00

Phaenon - Submerged (Malignant: TumorCD30)
With the debut release from Phaenon, it is immediately evident a heavyweight has arrived. The brainchild of Polish born, but current Maryland resident, Szymon Tankiewicz, Submerged is a dark ambient tour de force. Visually and sonically enveloping, this is an album of space and texture, slowly revealing a psychoactive soundscape of majestic, arcing timbres, circadian buzzes, and expansive drones. Heavy, and cosmically weighty in the beginning, Submerged evolves into something more minimalist and serene, radiating a celestial beauty, yet becoming even more bleak and suffocating as it progresses over it's 66 minute time frame. Experienced from start to finished, there’s a palpable sense of drifting and drowning, of being carried away into an endless, interstellar vacuum. An exciting new project, and a must for dark ambient purists. Check out Phaenon's myspace page for excerpts of new works at www.myspace.com/szymontankiewicz. In stylish 6 panel digipak, artwork by K. Enderlein (LOKI), mastered by Thomas Garrison... $6.00

Phantom Ship - Spheres CDr (Winter-Light: Win002)
Second release from this new, dark ambient label based out of the Netherlands and the third studio album from Italy's Phantom Ship, following self-released I.G.N.O.T.O. , in 2012. As with the previous releases, one gets the feeling when listening to 'Spheres' of being a passenger. A passenger aboard this vast, ghostly vessel that eerily glides through the galaxy, or across the thoughts and expanses of the inner mind; equally just as distant. Aboard this vessel, you become an observer. A witness to the might, power and wonders of the universe. A coming together of great forces; clashes between energies of immeasurable magnitude, such as on the track 'Orbiting Iron Spheres'. High quality cinematic and celestial dark ambient with a distant underbelly of industrial churn. For fans of False Mirror, Atrium Carceri, and the like.. $10.77

Phase II - Afterglow (Ahnstern: Ahnstern29)
has been a little over thirty years since the inception and all-too-brief life span of Phase II, the progressive-folk band founded by Mark Andrews (Blue Grass) and Nicholas Tesluk (Changes). Since that time, only the five selections on their self-titled, blue vinyl, extended-play record (and a handful of songs featured in recent anthology appearances) have found an audience outside of the venues where the group performed live during their original three-year tenure. That is about to change! As the piece de resistance of Phase II's artistic career to date, the band's new album Afterglow has arrived, introducing modern listeners to their unique and timeless mixture of varied musical stylings. Included in this expansive release are six songs from their original repertoire - in some cases, songs only rehearsed, but never before performed in any venue - all recorded here for the very first time. As a special reprise, all of the songs from the blue vinyl record (now long out-of-print) have been enhanced and included on the Afterglow album. And to bring things full-circle, Phase II is also proud to present a recording of its first all-new song of the twenty-first century on this compact disc.To round out an already-generous Phase II presentation, the album concludes with "Candle in the Night", their complete pre-progressive, conceptual radio program from 1978 (two songs of which were included on 2004's Tonwerk Flammenzauber 2 CD). The Afterglow package includes an attractive booklet featuring full lyrics, as well as an anecdotal history of the band in text and photos.Whether during their "folk duo" period, or as a full progressive band, the original warmth of the music of Phase II was felt all-too-briefly and by all-too-few. Afterglow is a comprehensive retrospective of their original songs. Now that Nicholas and Mark have reunited in this "Digital Age", may it also provide a launch pad for exciting new works to come.Phase II Afterglow - Thirty-two years in the making ... and not a moment too soon!. $6.00

Phelios - Astral Unity (Malignant: TumorCD44)
Following two CDs on Eternal Soul and a recent split LP on LOKI, Germany’s revered dark ambient project Phelios makes their first appearance for Malignant. With its swirling cosmic drones and sweeping, cinematic drift, the music of Phelios is breathtaking and hypnotic, often evoking moments of serenity and beauty, yet spiking them with deep cushions of ritualistic percussion and textural squalls that suggest something much more ominous and threatening looms on the vast horizon. Collectively, Astral Unity is thoughtful and concise – a vivid and richly detailed entity that’s alive and constantly evolving, channeling the universe while simultaneously exploring the inner regions of a more primordial earth. In 6 panel digipak, with gold foil stamping.. $6.00

Phelios - Gates of Atlantis (Malignant: TumorCD70)
The first new recording from Phelios since 2010’s highly acclaimed Astral Unity, finds Martin Stürtzer in fine form, creating yet another masterwork of meticulously crafted, richly detailed cosmic doom. Very few acts, if any, are more adept at composing such epically scaled atmospheres and Gates of Atlantis once again sets the bar impossibly high, offering up a multi-colored tapestry of sweeping sounds, full of majestic, nebulous drones and ominous strings, propelled forth by rising waves of tribal percussion and more earthen, textural darkness. The scope and breadth of the 7 tracks here truly transcends dark ambience, and the sheer weight and complexity of sound is nothing short of awe inspiring. A triumphant return from one of the genre’s great practitioners. In 6 panel eco-wallet with artwork by Pär Boström (Kammarheit) and mastered by Secret Lab.. $5.00

Philipp Münch - Greyscale CD (Ant-Zen: Act375)
While listening to 'Greyscale' a dramatic change concerning the lyrics is instantly obvious: they are now primarily in German, pointing at Philipp Münch's personal musical roots in the legendary project Ars Moriendi including famous co-members such as Andrea Börner (Morgenstern), Andreas Schramm (Asche) and Tim Kniep (Synapscape). Ars Moriendi's unique mixture of power noise rhythms, dark ambient spheres and often aggressively performed German vocals lay the foundation for the updated conceptual turn on 'Greyscale' as well as the fortified use of acoustic instrumentation besides omnipresent electronics. A project that also leaves one's mark here is Philipp's alter ego Rasputeen which combines minimal electro with headstrong and often time-critical lyrics. Assimilating these influences and giving them a contemporary update, 'Greyscale' displays the topical manifestation of Philipp Münch as an artist and as a musician - both as he is now and as he was, simultaneously.. $13.99

Philipp Münch & Loss - Transcontinental Desperation (Ant-Zen: Act295)
Consolidates the essence of two outstanding individuals: Philipp Münch who has made himself a name both as a solo artist and as a member of countless projects, and Dan Fox a.k.a. Loss, a highly regarded veteran of the noise music scene. When Philipp and Dan met in person a mutual artistic respect was the spark for a collaborative effort and resulted in a transcontinental interchange of inspiration and sound files. After processing each other's basic tracks, the final release clearly showcases both participants' distinctive style as well as the uniqueness of this creative amalgamation.
As the album title indicates, 'Transcontinental Desperation' is an aural statement of distress, anger and doubt, where topics like injustice and overthrowing the media have been integrated into the voice samples and lyrics. The suspense buried in the sound textures transmits an emotional spectrum of dejection and subliminal aggression, executed with a variety of electronic and acoustic equipment. Dark ambient soundscapes are combined with clear and distorted beats, impulsive sequencer lines, abstract effects, manipulated vocals - all these components build a perfect bridge between minimal electro and contemporary industrial music.
'Transcontinental Desparation' deeply connects two exceptional performers for a haunting listening experience - an enthralling liaison which might well be continued some day... $8.00

Phragments - Earth Shall Not Cover Their Blood (Malignant: TumorCD37)
You’ve seen it before. Certain bands or artists delivering their finest work with their first recording. Then, in futile attempts to capture some of the same magic, becoming formulaic and stale, rehashing ideas and never really achieving the same caliber of work. Others, expanding on the elements of their prior releases, and through a natural maturation process, get stronger with each release. That would certainly be the case with Phragments. With their third full length studio CD, this Slovakian duo have made remarkable strides not only in quality but in scope. Equipped with an enriched sonic palate, Earth Shall Not Cover Their Blood mixes forceful brass and dark orchestral strings with rolls of powerful tribal percussion, somber wind instrumentation, ominous atmospheres, industrial clangor, and a strong and commanding vocal presence, particularly on tracks like “Over Deadlands” and “The Kin of Cain”. Cohesive, complete, and epic, this is a release that will open some eyes to new found authority of Phragments. Yours to discover. In 6 panel digipak.. $5.00

Phragments - New Kings and New Queens (Malignant: TumorCD58)
The first new release from Phragments since 2008’s Earth Shall Not Cover Their Blood should be looked upon as a special, stand alone release, devoted not to the more daunting neo-classical atmospheres that make up the majority of Phragments' discography, but to something much darker and abstract; one long track, broken up into 6 chapters of slowly evolving landscapes of black and grey drones, sparsely interrupted by orchestral swells of golden light. And while this is indeed a more minimalistic approach to recording for Matej, in typical fashion, it is also very detailed and painstakingly composed, flowing seamlessly from one point to another over its 32 minute time frame. In terms of genre, this is pure orchestral dark ambient – bleak and solemn, yet with a certain calmness and emotionality, becoming almost sacral and poignant as it unfolds. Lmtd 500 copies in oversized fold out packaging.. $5.00

Phurpa - ya tog rid pa’i gyer 2CD (Zoharum: Zohar145-2)
This double album is the successor to the previous release entitled “Chöd” from nearly a year ago. The new release shows how Phurpa constantly transforms itself through their own musical exploration as well as personal spiritual development. Apart from intensive concerts, its members are famous for their long meditation trainings/sessions. This constant movement, the exploration of various techniques and discovering new inspirations in eastern culture makes Phurpa musicians more and more eager to use traditional instruments in addition to their distinctive “rgyud-skad” singing, thus enriching the already familiar formula. By emphasizing the sacred and spiritual nature of their activity, they seek to enrich it in such a way that the listener can find the novum, bearing in mind that not only the aesthetic but very spiritual world of the ancient deities of the Bön tradition is particularly important. The title, referring to the magical quest for the universe, should set the direction for the interpretation, or be merely a pretext or an invitation to this mystical journey.
The album consists of two discs with over 90 minutes of music. It is released in a 3-panel ecopak in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies.. $12.00

Pietro Riparbelli K11 - Radiodrama|Collapse CD+ Soundpackage (Radical Matters: RMLE011)
A special concept album utilizing incredible and original radio signals as source materials as recorded in different parts of the world by: Bad Sector, Strange Attractor, Clausthome, Galerie Schallschutz, Simm-el, and others. Recomposed by Pietro Riparbelli, focusing on the esoteric side of electromagnetic activities (ITC, EVP, and trans-dimensional phenomena) all around us. Here's what Pietro has to say about his own work: I’m dedicating to sound study related to the environment, with particular reference to concrete music, to phenomenology of perception and invisible phenomena. Currently I’m dedicating to the world of radio transmission and communication using only sound sources from short wave radio receivers and other types of signals. PT-R and K 11 are two parallel projects. PT-R is a project that deals with the way to create sound landscapes making the use of environmental sounds (field recordings). In this project I use only sounds coming from the world. K 11 is a project that deals with the world of radio signals, the trans-communication and other invisible phenomena, to create a dimension where the only sound sources are signals from shortwave radio receivers. In this project I use only sounds coming from the atmosphere and from invisible places. ". $8.00

Pjusk - Tele (Glacial Movements: GM0013)
Pjusk is Rune Sagevik and Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik from the west coast of Norway – both from small villages close to nature. The sound of Pjusk is inspired by the harsh Norwegian weather and wild landscape. At the center point of the collaboration between the two is an old cabin high up in the mountains. This is where most of the music of Pjusk is made – framed by snowy peaks and the sound of cold streams.
The album "Tele" (the Norwegian word describing frozen underground water) is a natural progression from the album "Sval" released on the US label 12k in 2010. Inspired by the arctic wilderness, Tele is a journey of snow, ice and cold. All tracks composed and produced by Pjusk except:. $8.67

Protagonist, The - Songs of Experience (Raubbau: Raub011)
Re-issue of this outstanding CMI release from 2005, including the Interim EP. Here's my original review: " Incredible, meticulously crafted compositions, full of crushing weight and drama, gathering at the intersection where dark ambient meets neo-classical. Very cinematic, very professional in sound, and very grandiose in scope, with deep timbres and tense strings rising to meet resonant brass, soaring choral vocals, heavy percussion, and literary samples. Just like his debut, A Rebours, the title Songs of Experience betrays the literary impact on the music. And just like the poems of William Blake, these compositions strive to forge a perfect marriage between romanticism and darkness, with most emphasis on the latter this time around. Of the eight tracks, some are reworked versions of rare compilation tracks and some are completely new. Taken together they show the steady evolution of The Protagonist in the 21st century, of an artist that treasure an impeccable end-product over fast turnarounds and proliferation. Brilliant. A late entry for record of 2005".. $10.00

Pterygium - Concealing the Past CD (Tesco: Tesco127)
Pterygium is another discovery that was brought to a bigger audience via “Projekt Neue Ordnung II” 4LP Box. Like “DEATHPANEL” the Australian outfit did surprise with his outstanding atmospheric droned textured power electronics. Concealing The Past, Pterygium’s first CD and second full length album compiles a assemblage of studio recordings throughout 2017 and 2018. From jarring analogue live sessions to melancholic, nonchalant atmospheres, each piece disconnects from the next, self containing singularity ideas that present as individual representations of every day chaos and detachment. Continuing on from his debut album “Grip”, Concealing the Past explores greater textural depths, seeking a more elaborate, expansive sound palate. This culminates in adroit switches between cold and bleak to manic and uncompromising. Underlying drones mold layers together leaving melodies to punctuate the structural development of each work. Freestyle, improvised power electronic workouts serve to separate the somber uncertainties. Simply put, Concealing The Past is 9 episodes of modern Sturm und Drang detailing rationalized toil authenticated by modern social tendencies.. $14.67
