Wakeford, Tony - Not All of Me Will Die
(The Eastern Front: Front023)
 |
«Non omnis moriar»—«Not all of me will die». Over 2000 years ago, the Roman poet Horace wrote this line. Its poignant defiance of human mortality and faith in the transcending power of art rings out down the ages, finding an echo in this new work from Tony Wakeford, best known as the founder of seminal English dark folk band Sol Invictus. Not All Of Me Will Die is Tony Wakeford’s fourth solo studio album. It commemorates the life and work of the Polish-Ukrainian Jewish poetess Zuzanna Ginczanka, who was executed by the Gestapo in Kraków in 1944. All of the album’s lyrics are based on Ginczanka’s verses. As with his last solo outing, 2007’s Into The Woods, Tony Wakeford is joined here by a range of guest musicians and vocalists, including avant-garde composer Susan Matthews and members of Orchestra Noir, Zunroyz and Sol Invictus. $12.00

Waldteufel - Rauhnacht
(Ahnstern: Percht08)
 |
Re-issue on Ahnstern of this great mCD released a few years back, but with added material making it pretty much a full length release. Rauhnacht' was originally released by the Portuguese label Terra Fria for the (unfortunately) aborted Waldteufel European tour that should have started in Sintra, last October. Features six tracks, for a total length of almost 60 minutes, that explore the Wild Hunt and Twelve Nights folklore and myth. With the exception of 'Allerseelengebet' that was recorded last year at the occasion of the 'Language of the Wild Hunt' performance in a church in Portland, all tracks, based upon poems by German writers-poets, are exclusive to this release. Combining primitive ritual sounds, with traditional instrumentation, distorted electronic sounds and sometimes deep-throated shamanic chants and Germanic verses, Markus Wolff does not offer music that ''suggests'' ritual. This is the real thing -- despite the electronic/industrial elements the musical sound here stretches back before European music as we know it to the dawn of religious experience. In digipak, with beautiful booklet. Also available on LP. $15.33

Weihan - Symphonies of Divination
(Old Europa Café: OECD103)
 |
Symphonies of Divination is the sophomore album of this very promising project from the medieval lands bordering the cold North Sea, Flanders (North-Belgium). Dramatically straying from the neo-folk path of their debut album Galder, Symphonies of Divination offers dark and bombastic compositions with clear references to Slavonic, German and Scandinavian classical music. Heavy percussion, assiduous spiccato string sections, dramatic horn accents and haunting choirs form the backbone of this album. The cold and eerie narrative vocals enhance the grim atmosphere of the music even further. The lyrics, mainly in English but with hints of Dutch, Old-Norse and Swedish, are devoted to Indo-Germanic religion, myth and legend, the Nietzschean spirit and relentlessly attest to the grotesque decline of the modern world. The album will be released as a limited edition digipack of 540 copies; each album thus representing a gate to the Hall of the Slain, Valhalla. The concept as a whole is a key to higher cosmological understanding; let the 432.000th year of Kali Yuga begin with Symphonies of Divination! The cycle continues as a new world arises out of the shed blood of the old. $14.99

Welter in thy Blood - Through the Fields of Mourning CD
(Shadowgraph: Shadow04)
 |
New release from this LA based funeral -doom-ambient-black-metal hybird, offering an hours worth of foul, impure atmospheres and desolate hopelessness. This moves like tar….ultra sparse and depressive, with extended passages of ever so subtle, shifting textures and minimal drones that eventually rise to meet blackened guitar sludge, with crashing cymbals and whispered vocal torment, before drifting back into an ambient abyss. Music you probably don’t want to listen to if you’re on the verge of suicide, or mass murder.. $10.66

Wertham - Memories From the Pigsty
(Tesco: Tesco069)
 |
Wertham is the solo project of Marco Deplano, Italian mastermind of Mediterranean cinematic post industrial/folk combo Foresta di Ferro and active collaborator of numberless sound and visual projects spawning from post industrial culture to punk/hardcore. After more than 10 years of waiting and a handful of smaller releases, "Memories from the Pigsty" is the first full length CD, displaying a sound rooted in a mix of full frontal power electronics and searing industrial music with a plethora of samples and very aggressive vocals. Outstanding, biting lyrical content which should be interpreted as a real life diary, painting human landscapes full of domestic violence, white trash mentality, ghetto culture and street life in general. A real breakthrough for the Italian power electronic industrial scene, and long overdue manifesto of Marco Deplano. Will remind you of the classic Tesco sound established so long ago. Recommended!. $15.33

Whispers of Ghosts - The Coldest Place
(Twilight Recordings: TW1.52)
Wicked King Wicker - God is Busy....Save Yourself
(Cold Spring: CSR125)
 |
Wicked King Wicker is pure doom. Their brand of guttural expression strips away the rock n roll base and leaves nothing for the listener than the caustic reality of the darkest side of life. It is heavy, barbaric and void of hope. Wicked King Wicker has taken the power of doom metal and added noise to mix to make its point. “God Is Busy… Save Yourself” is their 6th album, and their first released outside of the U.S. Wicked King Wicker is unique, and their extreme doom stands alone as the heaviest, most brutal doom imaginable and it may take you places you don’t want to go.. $13.00

Wicked Messenger - The River Disappeared Sideways
(Plague Recordings: Plague05)
 |
Seriously dark and foreboding ambience here from Wicked Messenger. I mean really, where have I been that I haven't heard this guys stuff until now? More active than Visions, with deep, reverberating synth waves resonating across a blackening horizon, hinting at something massive and sinister looming just out of sight. Top notch.. $14.50

Wicked Messenger - Vision Rites And Techniques of Ecstacy
(Plague Recordings: Plague010)
 |
Other than having seen them periodically on Myspace, I confess I don't know much about this project. But now, even that acounts been deleted, so I have only the music to go on, which is ultimately all that matters anyhow of course. Normally I wouldn't even care, but the material is strong enough that it piqued my curiosity to find out more about this project and it just suprised me I hadn't actually heard anything before. So, what exactly do we have here? 7 tracks of deliciously dark, mystical, and occult inspired drift that floats and weaves it's way through abandoned Mayan temples and steamy Central American jungles. Minimalistic, bleak, desolate, and very haunting....what more do you need?. $14.50

Wolf Eyes - Always Wrong
(Hospital Productions: HOS245)
 |
Always Wrong is a mantra of severity. Wolf Eyes has been scouring audiences across the globe with their acid drenched industrial noise and dub terror psychedelia, establishing themselves as the trailblazers of a genre and pioneers of the long-form noise tour. Coming forth from the piles of tape loops and effects the bulk of tables reeling with electronics have been shed. This clarity never sacrifices intensity as paradoxically this is the most organic of the full lengths but also the harshest and most dissonant.Opening track Cellar immediately sets the pace of barraged edits and percussive electronics as startling vocals spit from the dry throat and remain unfiltered for the first time breathing a clear litany of scorn. a new voice is rising and it isn't happy. throughout the album non-electronic beats created from live drums replace programming while colliding tape loops and junk metal bring new unstable rhythm like a house with erroding foundation. Living Stone shows a more natural state of acoustic composition highlighting the despondent subtle plucking of controlled guitar improvisation that could come from natures ghost. forging ahead in We All Hate You loud tonal horns and architectuarly placed electronics. however their aesthetic core of pummeling hasn't been abandoned as the aggressive Broken Order takes hold with shrill feedback fueling industrial cannon blasts of white hot noise that burn the body from the neck down. an eerie harmonica driven death march straight out of "Once Upon a Time in the West" cries on the closing track 'Droll/Cut the Dog.'Immediately it is clear that Wolf Eyes have crafted a statement with maturity that stands at the top of their mysterious discography. Always Wrong is a denial against conformity and the triumph of walking a path alone. Young, Olson, Connelly.. $11.50

Wolfskin - O Ajuntar das Sombras
(Malignant: TumorCD22)
 |
Finally, after years of delay, O Ajuntar das Sombras by Wolfskin is finally unleashed. Initally intended to be a re-issue of 2001s very limited The Gather of Shadows by the Setting Sun CDr (Ajna), it eventually evolved into a re-working of three tracks from that release, complimented by 7 newly recorded tracks. As the Wolfskin era comes to end , this release represents a glimpse into their past
a more organic, flowing ambient record than what you may find today, and perhaps the least conceptual of all their releases. That being said, it most certainly will go down as one of their more stunning, darker visions; a masterpiece of shadowy atmospheres and drifting currents, featuring multiple layers of archaic sounds, foggy, nebulous textures, and ritual invocations, perfectly combined to form a release of intense depth and complexity.Must certainly rank among the finest dark ambient records released in the history of Malignant. In elegant 4 panel digipak. Audio sample at the Malignant myspace, or available for download from iTunes: iTunes . $12.00

Wolfskin feat. Last Industrial Estate - Stonegates of Silence
(Malignant: TumorCD46)
 |
And so the journey formally ends for Wolfskin, 15 years from whence it began with the release of the Hidden Fortress cassette back in 1995. The essence of Wolfskin has transformed and mutated throughout the years, reaching on "The Stonegates of Silence" it's simpler form….one of desolation, solitude, insanity and death, the final frontiers of human existence. As he did with The Hidden Fortress: A Revisitation CD, Wolfskin once again pairs up with Anders Peterson of Objekt 4 fame, now operating under the name of Last Industrial Estate for the purposes of this recording. This is Wolfskin at its bleakest and most restrained, offering 5 tracks of enveloping ambience built around foggy, ambiguous textures and an endless flow of drifting isolationism, shapeless horrors, and oppressive subterranean heaviness. In the case of Stonegates, Wolfskin goes out not with a bang, but with a slow, evolutionary creep into the shadows, forever etched in the lexicon of dark ambient music. In 4 panel digipak.. $11.00

Wolfskin f/ Objekt4 - The Hidden Fortress: A Revisitation
(Neuropa: NRP10)
 |
Not a re-issue of a Wolfskins first cassette (and first release) from 1995 , but rather, as the title suggests, a revisitation...the material re-worked and remixed by not only Wolfskin, but Sweden's Objekt4 as well, giving the material a whole new dynamic. If you're unfamiliar with Wolfskin, you've been missing out on one of the most unheralded and exciting dark ambient projects in existence. Blissfully dark and harrowing atmospheres, full of multiple layers of ritual sounds and brooding black ambience. Almost perfect. This together with the Vestigial that just came in...man, that's about as good as it gets.. $16.50

Women of the SS - John Zewizz Presents His Infamous...
(Inner-X Musick: XXX73)
 |
Proper re-issue of the CD originally released on RRR back in 1999. A side project of John Zewizz (Sleep Chamber), Women of the SS consists of some rather surreal and psychedelic soundscapes, loops, dark atmospheres, and a steady stream of female spoken word, all of a provocative sexual/S&M nature.. $12.00

World Downfall - When the World Ends
(L-White: LW039)
 |
New CD from this Canadian p.e. act. It's been a long time since I listened to their last releases, but if memory serves correct, this takes a more subdued approach. Less white noise and more of that sort of singular, pulsating frequency style a la Anenzephalia. It's certainly better for it, and even toned down it still manages to be as antagonistic as before.Hypnotic in it's simplicity and notable for it's more 'organic', raw, and lo-fi feel. I'm surprised at how much I like this. Play loud for maximum effect. Lmtd 300. $13.33
